How Do Actors Find Agents?
If you're going to get an agent, you want to make sure the one
you get is franchised by the actor's unions like the Screen Actor's
Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio
Artists (AFTRA).
A complete list of SAG agents can be found at the local SAG branch
or online at www.sag.org.
After choosing some agencies you might be interested in, you need
to mail in your resume and headshots. Understand that most of these
packages will be dumped in the office trash. Others will sit in
a stack for months before being opened.
Timing is everything. Looking for a theatrical agent should be
done during the summer months when TV casting is slow and shows
are in reruns. The worst time for an actor to look for an agent
is during pilot season in January and February.
When you submit your package, target your mailings to save time
and postage, picking only the agencies you feel will look at you.
The most effective way to get an interview with an agent is to
network. Get out there and meet people in the industry who have
contacts high up in organizations. Go through your entire family
and extended family and find anyone who might be related to someone
that could help you out.
If you don't know the person that well, offer to take them out
to lunch or something so they get something out of all of this.
During this time, they can find out what you're looking to do and
feel comfortable going to bat for you, getting you an interview
or a phone call with their contact.
Once you start talking to agents, make a file on your computer
of who you talked to, when you talked to them, and what you talked
about. This way, when you talk to them again, you'll instantly be
able to recall this information immediately.
