Dofollow Trackbacks Plugin

DoFollow is the latest way to spread link love to your readers and it is indeed growing rapidly. At first, I haven ‘t given much attention to the dofollow movement since eventhough you have spam blockers like Akisment installed, people can still spam your posts by leaving meaningful comments just to get backlinks. I am against this. This is why I have created the Dofollow Trackbacks plugin to share your link love only with the people who has found your post valuable enough to link it on their blog.

Although I have always told WordPress users to increase their page rank value and the quality of seach engine optimization on their blogs, I highly encourage bloggers to share their link love with other bloggers. Other dofollow plugins like the ones from Semiologic & Kimmo Suominen, in my opinion, caused a new type of spam to erupt in the blog network. Even though many people do remove rel=”nofollow” in their links , you can not be sure if they are really intimate about sharing link love and deactivate the plugin later on.

Installation of Dofollow Trackbacks Plugin:

  1. Download the source file: thb-dofollow-trackback.phps
  2. Rename the file to thb-dofollow-trackback.php
  3. Upload it to your plugins folder
  4. Active the Dofollow Trackbacks Plugin on the plugin page

spacer I came up with this “U Trackback I Follow” image to post it on your webpage and please include a link to this post to encourage more people to remove rel=”nofollow” in their trackback links. You can save the image by right clicking and selecting save image as. Its pretty small (97 * 97), so it can easily fit in your sidebar.

For support or any other questions, please leave a comment on this page. I will return them as soon as possible.

This plugin will change rel=”nofollow external” into rel=”external”.

Am wondering if “external” is still needed. Might affect Google’s pagerank as well.

Do you know more about this?

  2. spacer admin says:
    May 31, 2007 at 2:14 pm

No it will not affect Googles pagerank. rel=”external” is the same thing as target=”_blank” which opens the link in a new browser window.

I downloaded, renamed and uploaded the file as per instructions. Activated the plugin from my WP admin. But links are still “external nofollow”. Any solution?

Have you checked the links for the trackbacks or the comments? Comments will still have the nofollow attribute, but the trackbacks will have only “external”. Could you give me a link to a blog post on your website with trackbacks?

Besides what G says about nofollow, the link still has some weight.  G keeps pushing nofollow but the still have to consider the fact that a link has some weight.  Their dilemma will be how to discount the spamdexing and link farms out there without cutting off a massive part of what makes the internet the internet, i.e. relevant content from real people.

The problem is that G did not anticipate the problem that blog links would create – I'm not just talking blog comments but everything else that goes with blogging and linking to others as part of the blog social ecosystem.

So they have been constantly tweaking their link weighing formulas to compensate.

But now that we're entering Web 2.0, the differences between blogs, forums, articles, portals, and content rich sites are merging.  RSS feeds, trackbacks, social networking, and other forms of sharing, linking and tagging are all merging.

Keep on linking guys.  It works and will always be the primary method of site valuation regardless of what G tries to do to devalue certain types of links.

Thanks for the great plugin. It is only fair that a link be provided back to the person who links to you. This makes it followable, which is great. Keep up the good work!

You have to look at the trackbacks! This plugin is called dofollow trackbacks. It only removes nofollow from trackbacks, not from normal comments.

The trackbakc plugin is a nice addition and can surely make the quality of comments on these sites better!

At www.dofollowblog.info I have started a list of do follow blogs, currently over 750. Please excuse the AdSense but it has been a lot of work to gather these lists.

I am seeing an increase in dofollow blogs, which is nice. It really is just a matter of maintenance and I think the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

I would be willing to take the chance that people will spam to use Do Follow. There are some good spam zappers out there. If someone comments, the least you could do is link back.

I assume I need to add some code to my single.php file
