Favorite Building Awards Ceremony in May: Nominations Now Open

May is Preservation Month, providing the perfect timespacer to show how your community’s history honors the past and helps build the future. Architecture makes visible the values that a community holds. When architectural treasures are saved, the effect on civic spirit often surpasses the importance of the structures themselves.
Nominations are currently being sought for “Favorite Buildings in Kirkwood.” Buildings or places need not be a “designated” Kirkwood Landmark. The members of the Kirkwood Landmarks Commission shall review all nominations to select this year’s recipients. “Recognition Awards” shall be announced during the month of May, Preservation Month. Click here for the announcement and more details.

Construction Update on Walker Lake Path in Kirkwood Park

Despite more winter-like conditions, progress continues to move forward with the Walker Lake project. Most of the recent work has involved construction of the various natural stone retaining walls that will allow the necessary grades for the lake perimeter path to be accomplished. Demolition of the two handball courts are also complete and work on the rain gardens that are going in that area has started as well. The peninsula area is nearing completion with the paver areas, turtles and benches installed. The steps in this area have been formed as well and are expected to be poured this week. The path will take another eight weeks to complete, depending on the weather. Landscaping is expected to be completed by May.

Got (Corrugated) Cardboard?

Don't have room in your recycling cart for all that holiday corrugated cardboard? It's that time of year when residents are likely to have a lot of cardboard boxes due to holiday online ordering.  Rather than clogging up your recycling cart with moving boxes and shipping boxes (the "corrugated" cardboard type), which makes it get all your regular recyclables into the cart, let the City pick it up separately.  Here's how:  On your regular collection day, set out all the corrugated cardboard on the curb, about three or four feet away from your recycling cart.  Be sure to place all your regular cardboard - shoe boxes, cereal boxes, etc. - inside the cart with your other recyclable materials.  ONLY the corrugated cardboard should be placed outside the cart, and be sure to allow enough room (3 to 4 feet) for the automated arm of the recycling truck to be able to access your cart.  Easy as 1-2-3.
