Exclusive hands-on video and gallery: Band Hero review

Posted by Chris Smith on Wed 28 Oct 2009

T3 rocks out to some... erm...Taylor Swift.

This November sees the launch of Band Hero, which is basically Guitar Hero for those non-gnarly pristine souls, who'd rather spend their Saturday nights watching X-Factor than leaving a trail of carnage at a heavy metal show.

First of all, the set list reads like it's been hijacked by Simon, Louis and Cheryl. We've got Kylie and Robbie duets, Lilly Allen and Taylor Swift headlining the shows, ousting the likes of Dragonforce and Slayer. The menu system has been overhauled, mimicking the production values of the Saturday night pop music show, but it looks great.

It's unsurprising really. The GH series has been dumbing down the harder element to broaden its appeal to Singstar fans since World Tour, while allowing its core rock audience to get extra kicks from games like Greatest Hits, Metallica and Aerosmith editions.

But what might encourage fans of the early games to become pop stars is the introduction of a brand new drumset. Launch the Band Hero gallery to see hands-on pics of the new features and our view on the features that make this kit a much better option than GH's first effort. There's also a new Guitar too, with some cute aesthetic changes and some handy additions to improve accuracy.

Features from the recently-released Guitar Hero 5 are also carried over into this game. Players can drop in and out of mutliplayer songs without killing the whole band, Xbox Live avatars are playable characters and groups can customise bands as they wish, with four guitarists, four drummers and four singers if that floats the boat.

Check out our exclusive video (sorry for the slight sound issues) report to your right to see the worst Taylor Swift cover in the history of the world, and be sure to check out the Band Hero gallery for a closer look at the finest GH instruments yet.
