There were a few twists and turns, but in the end the Division 2 hockey pre-regional featuring Downriver teams turned out the way it often does with Trenton heading to the regional finals.
The Trojans beat Woodhaven 5-1 at the Ice Box Thursday night to advance to Saturday nights regional final at 7:30 p.m. against Livonia Stevenson.
Stevenson earned its regional final berth with a 3-1 win over Livonia Churchill Thursday night.
Trentons march through the four teams in its regional tournament did not come without some frustration.
On Monday night the Trojans fired 38 shots through the first two periods at Anderson goalie Chris Dusik and only had one goal to show for it. Trenton finally broke through in the third period and won 5-0
Thursday night against Woodhaven, Trenton outshot the Warriors 10-8 in the first period and found itself trailing 1-0.
Trenton Coach Mike Turner said his advice to the team was the same in each game: Be patient.
We told them, dont panic, keep working, good things will happen, said Turner. We are playing with some confidence and we knew if we kept on working things would be all right.
The tide turned early in the second period when Trentons Phil Pugliese outhustled the Woodhaven defense to the puck and was able to slide it under Woodhaven goalie Trevor Monaco.
It was the first goal Monaco had allowed in more than four periods of playoff action. A spam of more than 70 game minutes.
It was not the last goal.
Trenton scored on a power play 47 second later and the Trojans had a lead they would never relinquish.
The goal that stood up as the game-winner came off the stick of Justin Dunn, who was the beneficiary of some quick passing by the Trenton special team. Andrew Sawyer and Brad Teska assisted.
Turner said afterward that Dunns goal, coming so quickly after the first Trento goal, was important.
So too was the fourth goal, scored by Brenden Torolski, which came with just seven seconds to play in the second period.
Sawyer got the third Trenton goal of the game when he knocked in a puck that had bounced off a Woodhaven defenseman and popped high into the air.
There was only one goal scored in the third period and it came when Torolski fired the puck toward the net and it bounced off Robbie Lindsay and in.
Trenton finished the night with 31-16 advantage in shots on goal.
It turned out to be Trentons night, but in the first period it did not look like it was going to be.
The Trojans had several great scoring chances, especially early, but Monaco stoned them.
Late in the period, Trenton got its first power play and buzzed the Woodhaven zone, firing five shots at the Woodhaven goal in the first minute of the man advantage.
But then Woodhaven captain and leading scorer, Mike Williams, blocked a point shot and got loose on a length-of-the-ice breakaway.
He finished it with a deke and a backhand shot past Trenton goalie Nick Ramirez for a 1-0 lead and that how the period ended.
Despite trailing, Trenton never lost its jump.
Several weeks ago the Trenton staff juggled its forward lines and Turner said the move immediately paid dividends and it continues to.
The line of Teska, Dunn and Sawyer is a solid one and the line featuring sophomore Quinn Preston and Pugliese, along with Brandon Hoffman is dynamic.
That line has a lot of speed and it gives us another dimension, said Turner. It took the younger guys a little while to learn how to play the high school game, but they seem to have gotten it.
Sawyer finished the night with three points and Teska, Dunn, Torloski and Pugliese each had two.
