Governor Signs Hannon Bill to Promote Access and Coverage for Women's Health Care Services

Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau) announces his legislation to educate the public on women’s health initiatives was signed into law (Chapter 342) by the Governor.  The new law requires the NYS Department of Health to establish an up-to-date website devoted solely to women’s health, including information on the 22 preventive services now covered with no cost to patients under the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA).

2014-2015 NEW YORK STATE BUDGET

 

The New York State 2014-15 state budget clearly reflects the Senate Republican Conference’s key goal of working together in a bipartisan way to give everyone the opportunity to succeed. The budget delivers on priorities outlined by the Senate Republicans including: more than $1.1 billion in additional aid to schools that is distributed fairly across the state; additional property tax relief for hardworking families; increased funding to help young New Yorkers afford college; tax cuts to help businesses create new job opportunities; and comprehensive ethics and election reforms.

Senate Passes Bill to Clarify Aggravated Harassment Law

The New York State Senate passed legislation (S7869) today, sponsored by Senator Michael Nozzolio (R-C, Fayette) that would clarify a state law related to the crime of Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree, that was declared unconstitutional by the state Court of Appeals last year.  

The bill addresses concerns cited by the Court and restores Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree, which was a charge used thousands of times in cases of domestic violence.  The Court ruled the law was vague and too broad.

Senate Passes Women's Equality Measures

The New York State Senate today completed action on all of the measures that make up its Women’s Equality Agenda. Three bills passed by the Senate would stop sexual harassment at work, allow for the recovery of attorney’s fees by victims of gender discrimination, and enable domestic violence victims to obtain orders of protection electronically. Senate Majority Co-Leader Dean Skelos called on the Assembly to act immediately on the women’s equality bills passed by the Senate. Over the past week, the Senate has approved eight bills of the nine-bill equality agenda. One of the bills was enacted into law last year.

Senate Passes Package of Bills to Fight the Financial Exploitation of Senior Citizens

The New York State Senate has passed a package of eight bills to prevent criminals from using financial schemes to prey upon senior citizens. The measures were recommended in a report released by the Senate Majority Coalition in May that examined this growing issue that affects thousands of senior New Yorkers each year. The type of elder abuse relating to financial exploitation involves the illegal taking, misuse, or concealment of funds, property, or assets of a senior for someone else's benefit. It can result in the significant monetary loss for the victim, and in some cases, a person’s entire life savings. Financial exploitation can range from the theft of cash, to much more elaborate schemes.
