RPGnet Forums FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

When are Columns Published?

Most columns are on a monthly schedule. We have four full weeks of columns scheduled each month, with that schedule beginning on the first full week of each month. A column will generally appear on the same day of the week and the same week of the month each time around.

Much less frequently we have semimonthly columns, biweekly columns, or even weekly columns ... but just writing something new and interesting once a month takes a lot of work, so that's the schedule we generally suggest to our columnists.

If we don't have a full week's worth of columns, we'll preferentially post on Tuesday and Thursday, as those are currently our days without reviews. Four times a year we have a "fifth week" which tends to have very light columns and (sometimes) special features.

How Can I Write Columns for RPGnet?

At any time we generally have a couple of spaces in our column schedule, and we'd love to hear from you! Send us mail at columns@rpg.net.

In that mail, provide us with an overview of your column idea. Keep in mind that we're generally looking for pieces that are distinctly different from anything else currently running. For example, if we're currently running a general column of GM's advice, we probably don't want another column with the exact same theme, but a column specifically on running LARPs or running with multiple gamemasters might be fine. (Conversely, if we've just ended such a column, we'll be happy to have a new one.)

Once we've OKed your overview, we'll ask for a sample arrticle, give feedback on that, and then ask for a couple of additional articles to get things rolling. Then we'll add the column to our monthly mix.

As noted elsewhere, we don't suggest writing a column any more frequently than monthly, as it can lead to quick burnout.

We also have a special "One Shot" column in which we post individual articles. If you're interested in just writing a single piece, mail us about that too.
