Stay away from gated communities and look for RV parks focused on hiking and birding in historic or rugged sections of the Grand Canyon State. Grand Canyon Area
Railside RV Ranch at Williams is a family place without age restrictions. Count on ski slopes, hiking and bike trails nearby, as well as easy access to the Grand Canyon. The closest RV park to the north rim of the Grand Canyon is Kaibab Camper Village at Jacob Lake. It has full hookups and its own nature trail. The Flagstaff KOA, about an hour form the south rim of the Grand Canyon, is a Green campground with wind turbines, reclaimed water and on-site recycling.
Tombstone/Bisbee Historic Area
The famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, enacted every afternoon at 2 p.m. in the streets of Tombstone, Arizona, draws RV visitors of all ages. Camp at nearby Tombstone Territories RV Park, where all ages are welcome. Its elevation at 4,000 feet will give you mountain hikes and vistas. Set up camp at the Shady Dell Campground and RV Park in Bisbee for another step back in time. They have vintage RVs for rent and an old-fashioned diner. Tour the old copper mine in town.
Arizona RV Parks for Birders
RV campers who are also interested in birdwatching will want to spend time in Patagonia and Portal, Arizona. Patagonia Lake State Park has 34 RV sites with electricity and water. No sewage is available. All sites are first-come, first-served. No reservations are needed. Sonoita Creek State Natural Area is nearby. Portal is even farther into the backcountry. It is the only place in the U.S. you might see an elegant trogon on its migration pattern from Mexcio. Nearby Coronado National Forest has rustic RV sites in its Sunny Flat Campground. Rusty's RV Ranch in Portal has a few more amenities.
Lake Havasu City and Yuma
The Colorado River runs due south from Lake Havasu City, where you will find the 1831 London Bridge and a replica of an English village. Truly. The Lake Havasu RV Resort has activities for all ages; bass fishing tournaments every weekend. Follow the river 150 miles to Yuma, where Cocopah RV and Golf Resort has all the amenities and no age restrictions. Situated on the Colorado River, the California state line and the Mexican border, Yuma is your end-of-the-line Arizona destination.
AZ State Park and National Forest RV Sites
Check out Mingus Mountain Campground in Prescott National Forest if you don't mind four miles of unpaved road in the final stretch. Stop in the old mining town of Jerome, a haunting a place. Mingus Mountain is worth the extra drive for its four hiking trails and its view of the Verde Valley. Arizona's state parks offer RV sites without age restrictions. One of the best is Roper Lake State Park near Safford. It has five miles of hiking trails and a swimming beach.
