“Drive” Gets UK Theatrical Release Date!
Posted by Celyn on July 1, 2011   •  1 Comment

Hopefully by now Nicholas Winding Refn’s Drive is on your radar. If it’s not, it damn well should be. Refn’s minimalist, 70′s inspired thriller has picked up some considerable momentum since winning the best director award at Cannes.

“Filmed in and around Los Angeles, the crime drama stars Academy Award® Nominees Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine, The Notebook) and Carey Mulligan (An Education, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps) alongside Golden Globe® Winner Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), Emmy® Nominee Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Oscar Isaac (Body of Lies, Robin Hood) and Academy Award® Nominee Albert Brooks (Taxi Driver, Broadcast News).

DRIVE is the story of a Hollywood stunt driver by day (Ryan Gosling), a loner by nature, who moonlights as a top-notch getaway driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld. He finds himself a target for some of LA’s most dangerous men after agreeing to aid the husband of his beautiful neighbor, Irene (Carey Mulligan). When the job goes dangerously awry, the only way he can keep Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best – Drive! ”

Soon UK folks will be able to see what all the fuss is about, as Icon Film Distibution have picked up Drive for a UK theatrical release on 23rd September 2011.

Carey Mulligan Headed Into The “Outback”
Posted by Celyn on June 28, 2011   •  0 Comments

What is it with Australia today? First comes word of Sydney, I Love You, and now Carey Mulligan looks to be heading to the Australian Outback in search of a little sci-fi action. She’s attached to star in a new film called, shockingly, Outback.

We may have to wait a little while for the film to get moving, though – as it’s based on an original idea from director Gary Ross and writer Nissar Modi, and hasn’t actually been written yet. Add to that the small fact that Ross is a little busy at the moment, working on The Hunger Games.

Variety couldn’t dig up what the film will actually be about other than it’s science fiction with an action focus. Graham King’s GK Films is behind the new movie, which hopefully means it has a solid idea behind it.

And the delay will actually help Mulligan, as she’s been in demand recently – she’s in Drive with Ryan Gosling and stars opposite Michael Fassbender in Steve McQueen’s Shame. Oh, and there’s the small matter of the sizeable role she’s getting set for in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby this summer. Since that film’s been planned for an Australian shoot, maybe she’ll just hang around afterwards…

Under Pretty Skin, Madness Lurks

Even in this age of celebrity sex tapes and nude snapshots on Twitter, watching Carey Mulligan in “Through a Glass Darkly” feels like a major invasion of privacy. Portraying a young woman sliding into insanity in Jenny Worton’s stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s 1961 film, which opened on Monday night at the New York Theater Workshop, Ms. Mulligan creates the illusion of someone who has no idea that she’s being observed.

There are moments when this extraordinary actress behaves with an ugliness and ungainliness that people reserve for those moments when they’re sure they’re alone. On other occasions she is lovely and ingratiating company, at least on the surface. Karin, Ms. Mulligan’s character, is on vacation with the members of her family, and she wants more than anything for all of them to get along.

But as hard as she tries, Karin can’t stop feeling the pull of the shadow world inside her, a world that starts to seem more real than any external existence. Ms. Mulligan makes sure that we, too, feel that gravitational force, and it is not an easy sensation. But if you want to experience the shock of illumination that acting, at its best, can achieve — and only occasionally does — you need to see Ms. Mulligan’s performance.
