Festivals and Events

The Estuarium has a long history of participation in annual festivals and events to include Beaufort County Water Festival, Port Royal’s spring Soft Shell Crab Festival and fall Festival of the Sea, Family Fun Day at Coastal Discovery Museum, area farmers markets and many more.

The traveling display includes story boards, touchable teasers and live animals. Contact us if you would like to have us participate in an event sponsored by your club, school or organization.

Sex and the Oyster
The American oyster, Ostrea virginica, spawns in the spring when water temperatures reach 68°F. A simple release of sperm and eggs followed by 3 larval and 1 post larval stages produces the next generation. Now get this, oysters can change gender. They may start as a male and turn female as they grow older. Oysters larger than 3 inches are probably female.
