"Animal Liberation and Atheism" Kim Socha on Atheists Talk #287, October 26, 2014

Tomorrow on Atheists Talk we have Kim Socha joining us to discussion the intersection of animal liberation and atheism. From the Amazon site for Kim's new book, Animal Liberation and Atheism: Dismantling the Procrustean Bed:

Religious arguments for animal rights and liberation are fairly common in the literature on the animal question and the animal condition. Meanwhile, arguments considering animal liberation from a deliberately secular perspective are virtually nonexistent. In Animal Liberation and Atheism: Dismantling the Procrustean Bed, Kim Socha initiates the conversation by exploring how the concept of religion is inherently antithetical to animal liberation. She also challenges secularists to view the world differently, free from religion's cultural baggage. Finally, Animal Liberation and Atheism is a call for everyone to consider developing a system of ethics disengaged from anthropocentric and speciesist mythologies so that needless violence against all beings and the environment may diminish.

"Fighting the Pledge in Schools", David Niose on Atheists Talk #286, October 19, 2014

David Niose is the past president of the American Humanist Association and legal director for the Appignani Humanist Legal Center. In 2012 and 2013 he argued in that a Massachusets law requiring teachers to lead the Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional under the Massachusets constitution. In May 2014, the Massachusets Supreme Judicial Court finally ruled against the interests of atheist students in the matter, but Niose remains interested in the topic.

This Sunday, he joins Scott Lohman to talk about the case; his upcoming book, Fighting Back the Right: Reclaiming America from the Attack on Reason; and the AHA 2015 National Conference.

"The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars", Michael Mann on Atheists Talk #284, October 5, 2014

Dr. Michael Mann is a climatologist and geophysicist and was the lead author of the paper that introduced the "Hockey Stick Graph" that shows the accelerated trend of global mean temperatures since the late 19th century. He has been the subject of repeated personal attacks and lawsuits initiated by climate change deniers, but he has bravely kept on with his work. He was a key contributor to the "Observed Climate Variability and Change" chapter of the International Panel on Climate Change Third Scientific Assessment Report.

In 2012, Mann published a book detailing the efforts of the denialist machine to swing public opinion away from the science of climate research, delaying societal changes that could mitigate the effects of global warming. The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches From the Front Lines will be the subject of our show this Sunday. Greg Laden will interview Michael Mann.
