The Museum is pleased to announce two new books on the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. These are the first of a new series on
the Earthquake and Fire of 1906 utilizing the research of Gladys Hansen and her Dead Study plus additional museum materials.
The next books will cover the Fire Department, Police Department and Politics, Military, and Fact and fiction of the
earthquake and fire of 1906 (titles tentative at this time).
The first book is Earthquake, Fire and Epidemic published by Untreeds. The authors are Gladys Hansen, Richard Hansen and
Doctor William Blaisdell. The research for this book is from the wonderful e-mail and materials in the extensive collection
of our Museum only. Almost five decades of exhaustive research by Gladys Hansen, Official Archivist Emeritus of San Francisco,
makes Earthquake, Fire & Epidemic the definitive discourse on one of the most devastating natural disasters in American
history. We are extremely pleased with this and very impressed with the help of the publisher in bringing out this exciting

Our second book is 1906 San Francisco Earthquake by Richard Hansen and Gladys Hansen. The book is part of the Images of
America series by Arcadia Publishing (ISBN: 9780738596587) and is available from most bookstores or from the publisher’s
website at arcadiapublishing.com. The book has over 200 images.

The City of San Francisco's official count of the dead was 478.

your assistance, however, today we can at last honor the lost citizenry, and
recognize all of the victims of the 1906 calamity.

USN Lt Frederic Freeman
An unknown, unsung hero of 1906 has recently returned to San Francisco via his newly-discovered
scrapbooks. USN Lt Frederic Freeman's photographs, letters and personal story shed light on the
history of the Great Earthquake and Fire. We look forward to sharing this treasure trove of
memorabilia with you in the coming months.
