Welcome to the ESNR website

Dear ESNR Members,

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

During the past 4 years, first as a member of the Executive Committee, and then as elected vice‐president, I have had the pleasure of working with two great presidents and two exceptional personalities, in Prof. Paul Parizel and Prof. Turgut Tali. Today, it is my great honour to serve as the first female president of the ESNR.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Prof. Tali and Prof. Parizel on all the work they have done for our society. They have led the society in turbulent times, and were able to remain calm and focused, while riding the political and professional storms. I personally wish them both all the best for the future.

The ESNR has grown into a well‐organised, well‐structured and financially sound society with more than 1,000 individual members and 2,000 institutional members, which brings the total to more than 3,000 members. Since its foundation in 1969, 45 years ago, one of the major goals of the ESNR has been to focus on education. The courses organised by the ESNR welcome all radiologists: those who need to acquire basic knowledge, those who are in training to become ‘true’ neuroradiologists, and those whose ambition it is to become advanced in certain subfields of neuroradiology, such as interventional neuroradiology, paediatric neuroradiology, spine imaging, functional imaging, etc. It is from the bottom of my heart that I would like to thank all our teachers for their time, effort and enthusiasm.

A few years ago, we initiated a strategic plan and mission for the European Society of Neuroradiology. As your president, it is my aim to expand, improve, and update this concept.

  • Under my presidency, the ESNR will continue to invest heavily in education, at basic, intermediate and advanced levels. Together with our current leadership, I strongly believe in fully integrating and embedding our teaching activities into the framework of our society. Ultimately, our goal should be to educate outstanding neuroradiologists who can serve our patients’ best interests. The ESNR will continue to work on a comprehensive European Curriculum for Neuroradiology. Likewise, we will develop practice guidelines for commonly practiced diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology procedures in Europe.
  • The ESNR, together with the newly founded European Board of Neuroradiology (EBNR), will work closely with the European Society of Radiology (ESR) to establish standards for neuroradiological knowledge and training in Europe. The ESNR will continue to increase cooperation with other scientific societies, both inside and outside of Europe. In addition to the firmly established collaboration with the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), our work with the Brazilian and South African neuroradiological societies has shown that we have much to learn much from each other, and much to gain from developing joint projects.
  • I am very proud and honoured by the increased number of European and of non‐European ESNR members. Moreover, we have witnessed a steady increase in the numbers of non‐European participants at our courses and meetings. In a few short years, the ESNR has become a truly international society. The ESNR will continue to be inclusive rather than exclusive, and will encourage all those who want to join our welcoming family.
  • The ESNR will continue to be progressive and oriented toward the future of neuroradiology.
  • The ESNR will continue to support young colleagues who want to become neuroradiologists, and will protect the best interests of the members who have placed their trust in us.

For me personally, it is a great honour, to assume the ESNR presidency and serve as your president. However, I am fully aware that this is also a tremendous responsibility, and that so many ESNR members have placed their trust in me. I can promise you all that I will do my very best to uphold and fulfil the commitments of the ESNR, and to make our society and our profession stronger, bigger, and better.

Thank you

Majda Thurnher

Milosh Perovitch Travel Grant Application: Deadline 30th Nov 2014

Milosh Perovitch was a Yugoslav physician who spent several years of his academic career in the Department of Radiology at Johns Hopkins Medical Institution (JHMI) in the 1960′s and 1970′s. Upon his death in 2006, Dr. Perovitch made a bequest to the JHMI Neuroradiology Division, in honor of Dr. Perovitch’s close ties to Europe, to offer reverse sabbaticals to Europeans willing to visit Johns Hopkins for a period 2-4 weeks. The goal of the visit is to exchange knowledge and develop collaborations. The stipend would be used to defray the visitors’ expenses for the month as a travel grant. Expenses over the allotted amount ($10,000 US) would have to be covered by the grantee.

The Division of Neuroradiology is now accepting applications for a visit for calendar year 2015. The application process is a 1-2 page letter addressed to David M. Yousem, Division Director at dyousem1@jhu.edu, detailing:

  1. Proposed material (educational, clinical, research) to be exchanged with Johns Hopkins Faculty and fellows and residents in the area of neuroradiology
  2.  If appropriate, proposed technique (interventional or otherwise) which could be taught/shared
  3. Months of availability in 2015 and length of stay requested (up to one month)

Contact information for one professional reference letter of recommendation.

Please include a CV and any reprints or PDF files appropriate for us to evaluate the proposal.

Decisions will be made based on merit and a vote of the JHMI Neuroradiology faculty. Decisions will be made by December 31, 2014.

Deadline for receipt of application for 2015 is November 30, 2014. For any questions please contact David Yousem at dyousem1@jhu.edu. Please distribute to appropriate society newsletters.
