Saturday school makes district – and kids – happy

Sixth-grader Daniel Raza was sanding a tic-tac-toe board he crafted in Mesa View Middle School's wood shop on a recent Saturday morning, well aware that a couple of things weren't quite normal. For one thing, sixth-graders don't usually get to take wood shop at Mesa View. For another, there didn't used to be school on Saturday.

California law penalizes districts for poor attendance, but offers them a way to make up the funding: enrolling kids in Saturday school. Ocean View School District has already “recovered” over $63K. But what's to stop putting funding over learning? “Supplemental education services” were an expensive flop under NCLB, how is this different?
