Maya Angelou (1928-2014): In Memoriam

Random House deeply mourns the passing of Dr. Maya Angelou. Her work inspired and touched tens of millions of readers. Dr. Angelou’s first book, the groundbreaking autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was published in 1969 to critical acclaim, and was followed by thirty-five more books, including volumes of poetry, essay collections, children’s books, cookbooks, and six further memoirs.

Robert Loomis, her editor of more than forty years, said, “Maya, a dear friend, helped change our hearts and minds about the African American experience in the United States, bringing it to vivid life, and her spirit and energy crossed all borders and deeply affected readers around the world.”

Gina Centrello, President and Publisher of Random House, added, “Today a light has gone out at Random House. Dr. Angelou was an inspiration to all, and we are proud and honored to have known her and to be part of the devoted team that publishes her work. Maya will be deeply missed.”

We are deeply saddened to share the news that beloved author and friend Barbara Park died peacefully on Friday, November 15, after fighting ovarian cancer heroically for seven and a half years.

Sixty-six years old, Barbara was best-known as the creator and author of  the New York Times bestselling Junie B. Jones series, the  stories of an outrageously funny kindergartener who has kept kids (and their grownups) laughing—and reading—for over two decades. Donations in memory of Barbara can be made to SIS, www.sistersinsurvival.org, which her family will continue to run.
