may, 2011 :: things are shaping up into the summer & fall ...

the various music-commission projects that have kept me all but under wraps all winter & spring long are largely complete (more info when it's kosher to name names) ... had a few free weeks in there to work on more porous music(s ; more below via the three soundcloud players) in a purely exploratory way (as oppposed to meeting some sort of conceptual or functional end) ... but right when the freedom really started to feel good, i received the mother of all commissions ; the chance to work at the grm studios on a piece for françois bayle's original 80-channel acousmonium !!!

i'll be in paris somewhere between the second week of september through the second week of october, then "premiering" whatever it is i come up with during the second week of october at the kontraste festival in krems ... this is of course a huge honor & something i plan on spending most of my time & energies on over the next few months, so travelling will be at a minimum ...

that said ; there are a few things scheduled on the performance tip over the next few weeks, largely on the eastern seaboard ; to answer the various "what sort of music are you making right now ???" queries that have been coming in en masse, i'll simply offer ::

"2011.4.11.14.09.00" (electric guitar, pedals, two amplifiers) ::

"2011.4.18.11.21.32" (electric guitar, pedals, computer) ::

"2011.5.1.19.50.14" (hybrid digital / analogue modular synthesizer, pedals) ::
march, 2011 :: happy new year !!!

people
have been writing in, urging me to update this (admittedly) cobweb-riddled space, which i guess i'm doing here. the thing is, i don't really have much to report (actually, there's tons to report, but almost all of it is tied up in nda's, contractual obligations, etc ... which is both funny & kind of sad actually ... i'll just say it involves a video game, a feature-film, a different video game, a television show, some earth-friendly advertising, and a few documentaries ... now you know why i've been so quiet !!!) ...

re: 2010, some of the same people have been admonishing me for not pointing out the little bit of positive feedback i've received in "the press" from the singles, tapes & lp's that became tangible over the past year ; of course it makes me very happy to read & hear positive things from the critical population(s) ... but let's not dwell in the past ; there are bunch more on the books for 2011, including an lp for the "no" label covering the final two "generator" performances (i.e. my solo sets at high zero 2010 & the "propensity of sound" festivals, taking place exactly one day apart & offering two completely separate variations of the piece that i consider the definitive versions) wrapped in a sleeve laid out by hand by my idol graham lambkin ...

on top of that, there are splits for dekorder & amish afoot & tapes for semata, ekhein & hyperdelic ... and bill kouligas of pan tells me they're both issuing a "deluxe" cd version of the "disingenuity" & "disingenuousness" pieces (along with some ... "out-takes" from the same sessions ... which are actually completely new pieces that happen to use similar methods & setups) and even a remix single with work from tortsten "t++ / various artists" pröfrock (i can't stress enough how crucially influential torsten's output has been on my own work) & composer / next-level vinyl mastering engineer rachad becker ... also, weird forest's davy bui has expressed interest in making the actual "generator" studio-release (orig. via cassette via root strata, but largely to totally unavailable from pretty much the week of its release) available again via a "boutique" lp pressing, which of course i'm all for ; so that'll likely hit the bricks running on the soon ... and yes, the kranky lps are very much still on the books (barring my "finalizing" of the included audio & design/spec ; sorry folks, i'm ultra-particular when it comes to that stuff) so there's that to look forward to ...

re: the dozens (literally, dozens) of different offers from promoters, venues, and music festivals overseas looking to set up concerts & tours & the like over the next year ; i'm flattered, but i'm mostly unable & unwilling to honor any of them right now (keep in mind i don't have an agent or a manager or anyone of the sort ; not for lack of trying, mind you ... i can only contend with about 2/300 emails a day ; mimaroglu generates that in about 8 hours alone, so my own music / art dealings have really been falling by the wayside) ... generator is over ; it was exactly a year in the doing, during which i learned a ton about approaches to live electronic music that don't essentially involve lying to your audience ; an experiment which helped clear the air & lent much to my own mental stability ... but now that it has run its course, i've yet to come up with a "next step" that doesn't tread over the same old ground ; i'm uncomfortable with the endless recycling of materials that i suppose make up a "career" in music ... at least enough to shy away from performance opportunities that don't offer something new and/or truly sympathetic to the spirit of furthering things ... when i don't write you back, it's both because i'm uneasy with committing to something far in advance given the state of things (not to mention the cumbersome apparatus that i've chosen to use in live settings ; not exactly a flight-safe batch of objects, especially in these tsa-gestapo times ... and whittling down whatever setup i do end up using purely for sake of portability / finances always seems like a cop-out, flashing back to the "laptop era" that, frankly, i'm not all that eager to revisit) but also because i don't exactly want to say "no" either !!! (i love travelling, playing concerts, meeting people, having new experiences, and sharing ; i'm human after all) ... this internal struggle is a constant yin / yang pull, bordering on parody ... on top of all of that ; i can't see a way to get my current, largely hardware-based live electronic music setup on & off a plane without it being a major production (or, a major downgrade for portability's sake) ; until then, consider my "hiatus" from these sort(s) of things ; i'll be happily at work in somerville & cambridge at the ems & especially at the mimaroglu offices, where aiding hundreds of other artists & record labels in getting their work(s) out into world always seems like the right thing to be doing with my time (rather than acting on egocentric impulses) ...

... that said i've made a few exceptions, based largely on the "sympathy" referenced above ; there was a duo set last week with my good friend bill nace that opened up some new possibilites ; hopefully we'll revisit them soon (and when my euro cases aren't blowing fuses) ... i'll be dj'ing at john twells & ian lawrence's new "spectral rehab" night on the 22nd of this month in cambridge (mainly as i want to hear some of my favorite steel pan, turkish psych, library electronics, break-dance, break-beat, jungle, ragga, "digital", sleng-teng, group sounds, belgian nu-beat, and minimal synth jams played over a decent p.a. in a place that serves manhattans) & a few days later i'll be playing with geoff "dj garbageman" mullen @ cf's new spot in east providence, with synth legends mist & tape mulchesse pak ...

also, i'm just as excited to be performing a couple of concerts in lindsay metivier's new "aviary" space in jamaica plain, first playing a duo with good friend & "no" recording artist benjamin nelson opening for eric "carl calm" lanham (aka 1/2 of caboladies) 's new palmetto moon electronic group project & daren "driphouse" ho, followed by an opening set byron westbrook's "corridors" project ...

then, in late may, i've decided to take a week or two off from the busy mms schedule to a bit of out-of-town travelling ... i'm thrilled to be going back to the town i spent the majority of my birth-to-18 years in (well, hillsdale ; woodcliff lake is the next town over) to play in darren bergstein's house as part of his "one thousand pulses" series, where i'll be debuting a new solo-synthesizer piece ... a few days later i'll be in st. louis ; kevin harris' floating laboratories is easily one of the best venues i've played over the past few years, so i was honored to be invited back for their first festival (which should be followed in the fall by another appearance in st. louis as part of the new music circle's regular series) ... where i end up between new jersey & st. louis (in both directions) is anyone's guess ; if you'd like to meet up & go record / book shopping and / or grab a coffee / drink / bite / meal, let me know ...

then, back in boston non-event will be producing a concert of marcus schmickler for whom i will be opening, marking my third appearance in the swank, back-bay environs of the goethe-institut, reprising a bill that took place in boston's chinatown back on september 11th, 2002 (we'll both be playing in quad, just like the original bill) ...

that's all to report for now .. i'll leave you with this program of "live music" i've "curated" (lollollol) for the auspicious network awesome (a real program, commercials & all ; more info at the network awesome site including program notes) covering some of my all-time favorite music-clips (by folks like laurie spiegel, seeselberg, voice crack, pink floyd, erkki kurreniemi, harry bertoia, giorgio moroder, celeste boursier-mougenot, bembeya jazz national, can, and more) all properly licensed for public view in the order i've asked them to be arranged here ::
