Help! My HDTV wont turn on. Whats the likely problem?by svt_proto » Tue Feb 12, 2013 10:48 pm My HDTV just crapped out the other day. I was moving some wires behind the tv and must have bumped the powercord turning off the TV. I thought i had just unplugged it but when i plugged it back in, the little red light comes on but it will not turn on. i tried using the remote and button (which is not a button but a touch screen button) but no luck. After fiddeling with the power plug for an hour, I have now opened up the back of the tv to see if a capisitor is blown. they all look ok visually.. I understand that there are only a few parts/circuit boards in the back that could possibly go wrong. i can get refurbished boards on ebay if i know which one went bad. my local tv repair said it will be 250 at least for him to repair it and i would have to bring it in as he cant test the boards by themselves because "you cant put enough of a load on them". i would really like to just replace the board that is broken. So my question to you is which board is most likely the culprit for going out? my tv is a Samsung 55" lcd tv model #LN55C650L1F

SORRY .... but, HDTV Repairing by a 'Virtual Tech' just isn't something to be accomplished! BESIDES .... do YOU understand that the "Sticker" saying that the Backside is NOT to be remover by Other than "authorized personnel" actually is there for a REASON? .... As in, YOU could become electrocuted! GIVE-it-up! ... Since you weren't appropriately "On-board" to begin with, there was ZERO reason for that Back Side to have EVER been removed! eli

"... he said that he could not put enough load on them .." Should that local tv repair person have really said that regarding those assorted Circuit Boards, ... NOW, you know at least ( one shop ) to which you need NOT to return! Besides ... unless YOU have a van + an able-bodied Friend, there's zero opportunity for that 55" HDTV to be removed for the House, delivered onto his "work bench" @ the rear of the Shop and, then, reverse the prcess with the HDTV still-in-tact !! ... that's One Awkward size Unit!! Time to "diligently shop" for a New HDTV! { consider a (5) years Extended, In-the-Home Warranty??} E.G. = Brand-new in that ~ ~ display size are under $800. eli

Re: Help! My HDTV wont turn on. Whats the likely problem?by seanstump » Thu Feb 14, 2013 11:56 am I don't know if your model was included, but a bunch of Samsung models from 2006-2008 era had known faulty capacitors that didn't age very well and would eventually fail. My out of warranty 2007 Samsung had the capacitors replaced ($10) and it's working fine. When powering on it started clicking on and off several times before powering up fully to a display.
There was a class-action suit about this. If you Google Samsung and TV power issues you should be able to find the Samsung page officially listing the affected models.

Re: Help! My HDTV wont turn on. Whats the likely problem?by bowjam » Fri Feb 15, 2013 5:21 am My 32" Vizio stopped powering up and I purchased a used power supply off ebay for $26.
That fixed it, but I didn't have the red power light lit with the original power supply. It's said that power supplies are 80% of most electronic problems.

Just because my car says to be repaired by a professsional mechanic dosnt mean i cant go in and diagnose the problem myself. I understand that i can get electrocuted by open circuits! thats why the tv was unplugged when i opened it up. All i wanted was an idea which board would be a good place to start replacing, thats all. the inside of the tv is actually quite simple to swap parts.

Re: Help! My HDTV wont turn on. Whats the likely problem?by eliwhitney » Tue Feb 19, 2013 8:21 pm Obviously, no problem on my part! . . . everyone should DO as they prefer.
But, perhaps YOU are not aware that some of those very same "parts" may retain a Charge still great enough to harm you, regardless. eli

Re: Help! My HDTV wont turn on. Whats the likely problem?by ragnars » Wed Feb 20, 2013 10:57 am The very word "capacitor" impies that it has the capacity to retain a charge, even a dangerous one, that can be discharged by providing a path to ground, regardless whether the equipment is attached to an external power source or not. Indeed some devices contain capacitors of sufficient capacity to power the entire device during brief interruptions of external power. Sticky fingers beware!

...Perfect! Although I'm NOT at all sure that he cares to be "Cautioned" at all .... instead, Hell-bent to save that almighty BUCK! In addition to your great explanation .... "IF" he happens to walk around and NOT attach an "ESD" grounding wrist strap prior to any "touching" either those Circuit Boards ..OR.. other Innards ... that 'emf' WILL be sufficient to really burn-out The Boards in short order!! - - - have good evening! eli
