Reviewing Recent Changes

Finally a long overdue update!

If you are an avid user you have probably noticed a steady stream of changes to your Infostripe and it’s well past time that I update everyone on what has changed, what is planned and the general state of different things. There is lots of information here.

spacer A New Start Page

Recently the main home page for Infostripe was changed from being a modified Infostripe to a page better suited to introducing new users to the concept of what an Infostripe is all about. The mobile version of this page was also changed to better match and further changes are planned as we evolve our message.

Native Apps for iOS/Android
spacer While an Infostripe will always work on any device with a web browser I thought it would be interesting to combine native HTML5 functionality with features like QR scanning. The Android app is admittedly lagging behind on features like being able to do QR scans but both apps have planned updates and there is good hope that HTML5 file uploading will be enabled in iOS 6 later this year.

spacer Image Slider with Navigation Added

Only a few days ago I added an image/photo slider that appears if you upload more than one image or photo. Pause and access the thumbnail navigation by clicking on the image, clicking again will resume the slide show. For the best results use images with a minimum width of 300 pixels and ideally all the images have the same height. You may need to remove your existing images and start over to get it right. For now the limit is still 11 total images but the max size for all Infostripe uploads has been increased.

A featured that was offline for a while returns in the form of a blue border around Infostripes in your Network that have been updated since you last visited while signed in. Look for more granular update reporting and notification options later this summer.

spacer  QR Code Branding

Recently the Infostripe (IS) icon was added by default to all QR codes. This was done most obviously to help advertise the Infostripe brand but it also serves to indicate that you can replace this part of your QR code with any image that you wish. You are not obligated to use it as it appears by default. An option to use your Home Screen Icon in this space will appear very soon.

Header Image Option Removed
There were several reasons I changed how headers work. 1. It was difficult to find a good image size/ratio that worked well for everyone. 2. Many people are unsure how to create an image. 3. I wanted to better control the quality of the headers and maintain the specific look that is an Infostripe. 4. I wanted to encourage the use of the Home Screen Icon option. 5. Server side resources and costs needed to be saved.

Header Background Color Removed

While it could be used to good effect and I struggled with options including making it translucent, ultimately it distracted from the brand image of a vertically centric Infostripe, particularly on a larger screen. The background color / wallpaper options now better frame an Infostripe. This affects larger screens the most. Related to this change was that the default background color for an Infostripe changed from a light grey to Infostripe blue.

spacer Main Menu and the Network Button

Sometime ago the main menu [Profile, Settings, Network] was detached from the  body of an Infostripe and moved to a fixed postion at the top of the screen. This was done for a better user experience and to better accommodate more devices. The Network button now has a dual functionality, when you are viewing your own profile or Infostripe clicking it will show you your Network. If you are viewing an Infostripe that is not your own the button will allow you to add (or remove) that Infostripe to your Network.

Home Screen Icon Integrated in Header

The Home Screen Icon that is used on iOS, Android and other devices as well as for a Favicon takes on a new role as part of the Infostripe header. The 72×72 pixel version of the icon replaces the default IS icon logo. The Home Screen Icon will continue to be integrated into different aspects of an Infostripe, as mentioned the next use will be an optional addition to your QR code.

Ad Removal, Upgrade Options Removed

There were two changes that altered the montization efforts of Infostripe. The introduction of an iPhone client meant that we could no longer offer the web based, PayPal upgrade options in app. With that removed it did not seem right that there were ads at all. So they were removed (again). It does not mean that ads/upgrades will not return in some other form but those who upgraded early will always remain upgraded and receive any future perks. This change also opened all previously upgrade only options to all users, this will not change in the future.

spacer The Rest of the Little Things

Smaller recent changes included the use of coloring on the starter theme buttons, the arragement of tabs in Settings and the removal of the standalone Infostripe Network page, again in an effort to save resources and focus on core functionality. There were also hundreds of tiny iterative changes made in an effort to always make an Infostripe as efficient, fast and easy to use.

If you have a question or would like further clairifcation on anything please feel free to add a comment I will respond there and/or update the post for everyone. There will be more posts coming soon covering more specific aspects of Infostripe and getting the most out of it as well as plans for future features and updates. It has never been a better time to try out Infostripe for yourself.

Create a photo album, combine updates and create something uniquely different and your own.

p.s Pocket Bot is now the official mascot of Infostripe.
