Welcome Back to School!
NEA's Read Across America welcomes all of you back to school. We are excited to share new resources and celebrate NEA's Read Across America, our annual celebration that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.

Oh, the Places You'll Go when you read!. March 2, 2015 is NEA's Read Across America Day and this year, the book is the Seuss classic, Oh, The Placed You'll Go. Start your planning and get ready to read this spring as NEA prepares a Seussational Read Across America celebration.

Books Build a Brighter Tomorrow Award
Diverse books are tools all children need to help form and shape their own narrative with a sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook. For educators interested in putting more diversity on shelves in schools Annie and SONY Pictures is working with the National Education Association to deliver Books for a Brighter Tomorrow, a national program to support classroom and school libraries and build on NEA's signature literacy program, Read Across America.
Awards of $1,000 are available to public schools that serve economically disadvantaged students in order to enrich book collections with diverse children's literature and offer titles that give kids a chance to discover themselve and their life experiences in stories. The application review panel will base award selection on creativity, ability to make good use of good books and solid strategy for using literature to help students more conscious of their own culture and that of others. Evaluators may take geographical and demographic distribution into consideration when selecting award recipients.
Deadline for completed application is January 31, 2015. Only award recipients will be notified in writing.
How to apply: Please complete all parts of the application, save the document, and submit it as an e-mail attachment to annieaward@nea.org. Remember to retain a copy for your files. Incomplet applications or those that include materials not specifically requested will not be reviewed. Eligibility: Applicants must meet all of the criteria below. Approved awards will be made to the applicant's school. Only one eligible applicant per school may submit an application.
- The applicant must be a practicing preK to 12 school library media specialist, teacher, or education support professional in a U.S. public school
- At least 70 percent of the students in the applicant's school must be eligible for free or reduced price lunch program
- The applicant must agree to serve as the contact person for the award and all related pulic relations activities.

2015 Read Across America Literacy Calendar available
The 2015 Read Across America literacy calendar featuring a variety of books and literacy tips is now available in limited quantities while supplies last. The calendar features monthly books, classroom activities and tips. To order, email NEA's Read Across America at readacross@nea.org.
We Need Diverse Books!
NEA's Read Across America is proud to partner with We Need Diverse Books, the collaborative effort by diverse authors and illustrators and literacy advocates to support diversity in children and young adult literature. We participated in their Tumblr and will work with We Need Diverse Books and FirstBook for greater diversity in classroom and school libraries and book lists that celebrate diversity of all kinds.
