Fifty Shades of Gray by E.L. James is a popular romantic/erotic novel currently topping several bestseller lists. It centers around twenty two year old virgin Anastasia “Ana” Steele, who meets wealthy entrepreneur Christian Gray. The two begin a non-romantic sexual relationship that inevitably gets complicated by emotions.
The novel’s success has brought up several controversies. Perhaps most obvious is its sexual content; most popular with married women in their thirties and forties, < I>Fifty Shades of Gray has been called “mommy porn” and was temporarily banned from the public library of Brevard County, Florida. In particular the book revolves around BDSM, with Ana in the submissive role. Is a woman enjoying a loss of control undermining feminism, or is it positive that readers feel comfortable exploring the idea?
Another issue is that the novel was originally published online as fanfiction for Stephenie Meyers’ Twilight series. This brings up new questions on both copyright law and artistic merit: James’ novel is quite different from Twilight (lacking supernatural elements, for example) and Meyer herself has praised the author’s success, but how this affects the publishing industry in the long term remains to be seen.
