"By the end of page one [Placidia] is in a perilous situation.  The reader must turn the page...and each of the ones following!"

"The plot unfolds with consummate dexterity...Its progression is logical and artistic, as well as imaginative.  Attention to detail shows solid research."

"Each character is treated in the detail required to play his/her part...In short order I felt like I knew them and wanted to know them even better."

"An outstanding manuscript...ready for publication."

Its August 410 and the barbarian Goths are at the gates of Rome for the third time in three years. The Emperor Honorius sits safe behind the impenetrable marshes of Ravenna tending his chickens, while his subjects starve and suffer under the threat of the invaders. One member of the imperial family lives in Rome and stands with her people Galla Placidia, the Emperors sister. At twenty-two she should be married and a mother many times over, but has refused to be a pawn to others ambitions.

Before she and the city fathers can negotiate a peace, traitors open the gates of Rome and Placidia is taken hostage by the Goth General Ataulf. Shaken, exhausted, fearing for her fate and that of her people, Placidia has nothing but her pride to sustain her. But one thing is clear if the Empire is to continue, the barbarians must be stopped and, if possible, turned into allies of Rome. Placidia must draw on all her strength and skill to, not only survive, but win the hearts and minds of the Gothic people and especially their king.
