Stephano Diaz and Troy Mattison Hicks started selling their unique scarf-necklace hybrids on the streets of New York in November 2008. Soon afterward, they set up shop on Etsy and within months opened a studio in Greenpoint to accommodate the growing demand for their designs. Their one-of-a-kind neck adornment is made from a single piece of soft cotton fabric, sewn into tubular loops, then layered to create a sculptural neck piece. “It’s definitely an attention magnet,” Diaz says, especially with all of their eccentric prints, which the duo draws and screenprints by hand. The patterns run the gamut from solid and demure to bright and bold, and the newest collection includes tribal designs, a dot-matrix print and “a misty cotton-candy” design that’s Hicks’s personal favorite. “It’s a cool accessory because you can be creative with it,” he says about the dozens of ways the Necklush can be worn; and with about 70 designs (and five different sizes), the options are endless. Going forward, the boys agree they want to “continuously pump out cool stuff because there’s no reason not too,” and plan to incorporate new materials (jewels, feathers) and fabrics (cashmere, silk) into their designs.
