Athletics
More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports at Appalachian State University, and dedicated fans love to cheer them on. Appalachian has been a dominant force in the Southern Conference for more than 40 years. On July 1, 2014, the university moved to the Sun Belt Conference—one of 10 conferences that are members of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
Nearly half of Appalachian's student-athletes earn inclusion on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, which requires a 3.0 grade-point average or higher while completing at least 24 hours in two semesters.
University Recreation oversees all non-varsity sports activities on campus, including intramurals, club sports, outdoor programs, and fitness and informal recreation.
