Foundation Relationship Statement

The Foundation of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) public charity, incorporated in 1965 to benefit UNC Charlotte through asset management and fundraising. University employees perform the fundraising and business functions of the Foundation. In exchange, the Foundation transfers funds to UNC Charlotte to enhance its teaching, research and service missions. The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The president of the UNC Charlotte Foundation is Niles Sorensen; the current Foundation Board Chair is Gene Johnson. The Foundation’s Tax ID is #56-6059417.

Operating Costs

It is a best practice among universities and other non-profit organizations to modestly assess private gifts in order to offset costs associated with administrative support and management of the gifts. The UNC Charlotte Foundation assesses each non-endowed, non-scholarship, restricted gift with a nominal 5%, and each endowment balance is assessed 0.5% annually.
