Musk Ox Counts (Hardcover)
Adrian said this book is "very silly, because the musk ox keeps jumping around the pages and ruining the zebra's plans." I asked if Musk Ox was a troublemaker and Adrian asked, "What's a troublemaker?" and when I explained he laughed and said yes, Musk Ox is definitely a troublemaker. So in summary, this sequel to A is for Musk Ox is actually our favorite of the two, and we enjoy reading it out loud and laughing at the troublemaker musk ox as he prances around the pages and messes with the zebra's counting.
Who's on First? (Hardcover)
This lively retelling of the classic Abbott and Costello skit has Adrian and his father in stitches every night. It is a read aloud that seems to get better over time, and it's the perfect gift for a baseball fan or a nostalgic parent.
The Beginner's Guide to Running Away from Home (Hardcover)
While at first Adrian was a little distracted by the somewhat creepy artwork in this one, it's now requested as his bedtime book most nights. What a fun romp inside the mind of a kid who's just had enough, and makes elaborate plans to run away from all the oppression in his family (WHAT? I have to go to bed before my older sister? My family is the WORST). With a taste of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, this one is a great read aloud and perfect gift to remind us all that sometimes there is no place like home.
A Little Books Boxed Set Featuring Little Pea, Little Hoot, Little Oink (Boxed Set)
At 4, Adrian has been enjoying revisiting some of the board books that he loved as a baby and seeing them in a new light. He especially loves this boxed set lately and had this to say, word for word: "Pea doesn't like candy and pig doesn't like messing up and the owl doesn't like playing and that's why I like them. These books are really lovely."
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile Storybook Treasury (Hardcover)
Christine and Adrian have been reading this a lot lately and it's a great picture book entry into a chapter book style of read aloud. Adrian loves the images and stories and Christine thinks it makes a great gift.
Creepy Carrots! (Hardcover)
With illustrations by our favorite artist, Peter Brown, Creepy Carrots is an adorable and just-the-right-amount-of-creepy-without-being-too-scary picture book. Jasper Rabbit is a clueless carrot thief who starts getting haunted by creepy carrots who eventually teach him a lesson. The gorgeous black, white, and orange illustrations totally set the scene and Adrian has loved reading this one over and over already. (Christine and Adrian)
Darth Vader and Son (Hardcover)
Adrian has found the best Father's Day gift for Bookstore Dad (shhh, don't tell). Darth Vader and Son will turn the Star Wars fan in your life into a giggly pile of mush. Where else can you see Darth Vader playing hide-and-seek with Luke? Or asking if Luke needs to use the potty? It's brilliant. You'll want to buy it for every dad you know.
Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! (Board Books)
These are some crazy dinosaurs: they play volleyball, they dance, they're every color under the sun. And this might be a book that you wouldn't mind reading over and over and over. Well, you'll like it at least through the three hundredth read. (Christine and Adrian)
Llama Llama Misses Mama (Hardcover)
Adrian's extremely interested in Llama's emotional state as he goes from super lonely and sad at school and then happy when Mama Llama comes back. It's rhyming and fun to read aloud, especially to prepare toddlers for preschool.
All in a Day (Hardcover)
Whenever we're feeling down, we read this book. McClure's woodcut illustrations are sweeping and gorgeous, and Rylant's text is a bit of sunshine and hope. We give it to all our new baby friends. (Christine and Adrian)
Hug (Paperback)
This almost wordless book is one of our favorites to read, you can change the story a bit each time, but the animals in the jungle are all totally cool and help Bobo find his mommy and get a hug. (Christine and Adrian)
