Destination: Thompson Okanagan

By Staff Reports

Thompson Okanagan is located in the center of British Columbia. You could say it's in the center of it all. From vineyards to orchards, mountains to deserts and skiing to golf, Thompson Okanagan has something for everyone.

Winter in Thompson Okanagan is paradise for snow lovers. There are many ski resorts, including Big White in Kelowna (rated one of the top five ski resorts in the world), that are sure to satisfy your hunger for the slopes.

But when spring hits (actually mid-March), golfers get their shot at one of the most beautiful areas in all of Canada.

If you go

There are more than 50 golf courses in the region -- including layouts by world-renowned designers such as Fred Couples, Jack Nicklaus and Robert Trent Jones Sr. -- that took full advantage of the region's lush river banks and rocky cliffs. For a unique golf experience, try The Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna and play through 45 acres of fruit-laded orchards and hillside vineyards.

That's not the only thing unique about Thompson Okanagan.

With more than 120 wineries, Thompson Okanagan is the oldest -- and largest -- region for producing wine in British Columbia. Wineries and dining make a perfect match, and there's no shortage of outstanding world-class option in Thompson Okanagan. A stay at one of the many spectacular bed and breakfasts along the wine trail is recommended.

With its abundance of freshly grown fruit, roadside fruit stands are common (there's nothing like an Okanagan peach). And outdoor adventure -- Thompson Okanagan is home to the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies as well as the country's only desert -- is guaranteed.

When summer hits, head to Okanagan Lake (the largest of five in the region) for some boating or water skiing. Fishing is also popular here, especially rainbow trout, carp and cod.

Perhaps no other city in Canada offers a better combination of good, affordable golf and a downtown, with such style, such personality as Victoria. The climate, which isn't as wet as you might be led to believe, allows its golf courses to stay open year-round, another bonus. What's more, some of the province's best courses are less than a half-hour's driving from the city center.
