SHAFTY; Doors @ 9, Music @ 10:00pm

Tonight Shafty continues a several months long Wednesday residency at the goodfoot! What began as essentially a goof – a chance to throw down some familiar dancey beats and jam for whoever felt like listening – ultimately lit a spark under the off-the-radar powder keg of Phish fans in the Portland, Oregon music scene. Brett McConnell (bass) and Rob Sipsky (guitar) spent more time talking about the possibility of putting a Phish tribute together than actually practicing, prior to that first performance at the goodfoot, in February of 2012. Expectations for attendance were moderate at best, yet before the band played the first note, there was a line out the door, culminating in a jam-filled celebration of the music of Phish to an over-capacity crowd! The demand for a repeat was high, and Shafty was born. If there’s a motive, it’s to recreate the energy of a Phish show, with the attitude of playful band-audience interaction at the forefront, sharp musical skill acting as a behind-the-scenes glue to hold it all together.
Over the first year alone, the band played 83 unique songs, ranging from spoken word moments such as Lengthwise, to epic compositions including You Enjoy Myself, Reba, David Bowie, and The Curtain (With), already to multiple sold-out and near sold out audiences. Classic Phish gimmicks are in full force: trampolines, megaphones, choreographed dances, vacuum cleaner solos, instrument switching, and the secret language are alive and well at a Shafty show. $7

L’IL SMOKIES, KORY QUINN BAND; Doors at 9, Music @ 10:00pm

Hailing from the utopian garden city of Missoula, MT, The Lil’ Smokies exploded onto the progressive bluegrass scene in the winter of 2009 and haven’t shown any signs of fatigue since. Sharing the stage with heavyweights like Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Keller Williams, Greensky Bluegrass, The Emmit-Nershi Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Travellin’ McCourys, Sam Bush Band, Fruition, Infamous Stringdusters, Bradford Lee Folk and The Bluegrass Playboys, and dozens of others, The Lil’ Smokies have no problem captivating large audiences. With a unique blend of traditional bluegrass, newgrass, unique original compositions, and sheer raw energy, The Lil’ Smokies weave seamlessly through genres, leaving something for everyone. The Smokies have played the Trap Bar at Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival (2011), the Bozeman Bluegrass Fest (2011), Sandpoint Summer Fest (2013), Wintergrass (2014), River City Roots Festival (2011, 2013, 2014), Northwest Folklife Festival (2014), the Northwest String Summit’s Further Stage and Main Stage (2013, 2014). This six-piece bluegrass ensemble features, Pete Barrett (guitar), Andy Dunnigan (dobro), Scott Parker (upright bass), Matt Cornette (banjo), Cameron Wilson (mandolin), and Jesse Brown (Fiddle).
Kicking off the evening is the inimatable Kory Quinn and his band, The Comrades! Songwriter Quinn, a DIY contemporary hobo intellectual, has a refreshingly homespun take on Americana, a very welcome sigh of relief in today’s contemporary market. After spending over 270 Self-Booked Dates on the road, spanning 7 countries, on three Continents this past year alone, Quinn still finds time to write and record new material. The just released second full-length album, At The End of The Bar, boils down red-dirt basics in a freewheeling roadhouse stew. Quinn’s songwriting is adroit and surefooted, offering sturdily constructed country, folk, and Cajun-tinged songs for his ensemble to really sink their fangs into on this instant jukebox classic. The songs are short and sweet but packed with clever lines, sentimental harmonies and twangy fills. All that makes them the kind of songs that hang around your brain like honky-tonk regulars. Amongst his self penned road-worn material are stories and song that harken back to old-time drinking songs and heart rending country standards. In time they will be themselves for they are never new and they never get old. $8

SCOTT LAW BAND, THE STUDENT LOAN @ 10:00pm

Scott Law may have been born in Southern California but his music pulls together traditions from every corner of the country. His latest album, Black Mountain (released October 29, 2013 on Volcano Underground), is all about his acoustic roots and the fiddle-driven string-band sounds of the Appalachian Southeast. On this beautifully captured recording, Law successfully draws upon a number of wide-ranging musical influences, from Austin’s alt-country to raw Bluegrass and even the improvisational spirit of bands like the Grateful Dead. These influences–and Law’s years of experience in groups like Hanuman, Brokedown in Bakersfield (with Nicki Bluhm), and Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings—combine to create a unique sound that the musician-singer-songwriter, now based in Portland, defines as “Current Roots Americana.” Scott is a goodfoot favorite whose spirit shines bright and whose notes ring true— we are honored to have him back on our stage.
Kicking off the night is The Student Loan. Together for nine years, SL is a progressive-acoustic newgrass project based out of Portland, Oregon. Their diverse style transcends genre, fusing elements of jazz, blues, rock and jam with traditional bluegrass instrumentation. They are known for their fun and funky originals, their quirky covers, and their knack for getting a crowd moving on the dance floor. $12
