When Showtime and German boxing promoter Wilfried Saureland announced the Super Six Tournament for the WBA and WBC Super Middleweight title, I was generally displeased with the format. As time went I grew to enjoy it and be mostly excited for the fact they can put the best Middleweights in the world against one another in tournament fashion. Participants include Saureland's own Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KOs), Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KOs), Mikkel Kessler (42-2, 32 KOs), along with Americans Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KOs), Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KOs), and Allan Green (28-1 20 KOs), who is replacing Jermaine Taylor after he withdrew from the tournament on Jan. 12.

After watching the first round of fights, they have all delivered in exciting fashion. Andre Ward's technical decision victory over Mikkel Kessler showed the very good skill of a great middleweight fighter on the rise. The top seed of the Super Six -Arthur Abrahams KO of Jermaine Taylor shows the reason Saureland wanted to put this tournament together and that reason it to put his fighter on an international scale. And of course, the split (yet controversial) decision victory of undefeated Carl Froch over the exciting Andre Dirrell.
Going into the second round of this tournament 1st place is Abrahams for getting the victory via KO. He is now pitted against the man who most consider the winner of his fight against Froch - the speedy Dirrell. In my opinion, this fight is going to be very evenly matched with both fighters having similiar fighting styles. The difference in this fight will be Dirrell's speed and jab usage.
Carl Froch's victories over Jermaine Taylor, and Andre Dirrell have not been - for lack of a better term - easy. In both fights he came very very close to being knocked down, and/or losing the fight. No doubt in my mind if Froch-Dirrell was NOT held in England, the decision would have gone to Dirrell. It's that kind of hometown advantage he will not be getting April the 24th, when he visits Denmark against Danish Mikkel Kessler. Kessler comes in to this fight with not only hometown advantage, but also with a lot to prove after his one sided loss to Andre Ward. In other words this is Kesslers last chance and he's going to look for not only the victory, but the knockout.
Andre Ward -or as I like to call him- "Showtime's future moneymaker" is looking ahead to what I believe is the biggest challenge of his young career when he faces Allan Green in the second round of the Super Six. Ward has gained respect by many of his peers and fans alike because of his crisp and fluent boxing ability, but this time it seems like he'll be meeting his match. Allan Green fought on the Taylor/Froch undercard and simply dominated Carlos De Leon Jr. with ease. Green comes in with great confidence in his bout with Ward saying in a recent interview "I just dont see anyone who can beat me". Green is also coming into this fight as the heavy underdog, as opposed to Ward who has to protect an undefeated record and high expectations from Showtime to win the tournament. For the people who believe that Ward is just going to run by Green, you've gotten brainwashed by not only his record but by the hype he's receiving from Showtime. Granted, Ward is coming off an impressive victory over Mikkel Kessler where he showed off power and great boxing technique. But Allan Green isn't one to underestimate, he is clearly the "sleeper" in this tournament.
The Super Six Tournament continues with Round 2 on March 27th from the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit,MI when Andre Dirrell meets Arthur Abraham. This tournament is THE perfect way to showcase great talent in a once lacking division. Other promoters and boxing organizations should look at this as a way of expanding, and rejuvenating interest in the sport. I know it has done so for me.
