Or Renteria. Or Hanley. I think this discussion is rather moot at this point.
He doesn't want to move off of SS, there's no pressing need to do it. This is something to discuss a decade or so down the line.

People conflate the two often for obvious reasons, but Hanley and Xander are really different guys. Hanley coming up had elite athleticism throughout his body; he was fast, he was extremely fluid, just a noticeably graceful athlete. You felt he could've played any sport, been a really good safety or something on a football team.
Xander's not really that way, from my few chances to see him. He's a good overall athlete, for sure, but he's not as fast or as fluid in his hips. But I actually think his hands may be better than Hanley's were, although it's hard to tell. He made a couple of plays that didn't look like much but showed some great hands ... once the second-baseman threw a terrible throw to him on a play at second, behind him and low, and he just snatched it out of the air completely against the flow of his body and managed to find the bag with his foot without any wasted motion. He didn't look gazelle-like, but he flowed right through the play, and his hands were rock solid. In the end, I think he maybe will lack the top-end athleticism needed to play short at the major league level as a bigger guy, but I don't think it's 100% sure yet ... and I don't think anyone thinks there's a reason to make any decision now. |
