The Magic Flute

Apr. 19, 21m, 24, 26, 28m, 2013 | Opera at the Academy

The path to wisdom has never been so whimsical.

When the Queen of the Night’s daughter is kidnapped by an evil sorcerer, it’s up to the heroic prince to save her. But in a land of enchantment, nothing is ever what it seems. Aided by a magic flute, our hero Tamino (Antonio Lozano) and his boisterous sidekick Papageno (Mark Stone) endure unpredictable, death-defying adventures to save the beloved Pamina (Elizabeth Zharoff) from Sarastro (Jordan Bisch)— and perhaps even the treacherous Queen (Rachele Gilmore)—to ultimately triumph in wisdom and true love.

With beautiful melodies, charming characters, and fanciful sets in a staging by Tony Award nominee Diane Paulus and conducted by Music Director Corrado Rovaris, this critically acclaimed production of Mozart’s classic will cast a spell on audiences.

This production of The Magic Flute was originally created for the Canadian Opera Company.
Audio excerpts are from Opera Philadelphia’s 2001 performances of The Magic Flute
Selections include the overture, opening scene of the opera ‘Zu Hilfe!’,  Papageno’s aria 'Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja', Sarastro’s aria 'O Isis und Osiris', the Queen of the Night's aria 'Der Hölle Rache', the Act II quartet for Pamina, Tamino and the two armed men, Pamina’s 'Ach, ich fühl's',  Duet 'Pa-pa-pa-papageno', and the final chorus.
Performers include William Burden (Tamino), Christine Brandes (Pamina), Eric Owens (Sarastro), Elizabeth Carter (Queen of the Night), Jochen Schmeckenbecher (Papageno), and Judith Lovat (Papagena). Opera Philadelphia's orchestra and chorus were conducted by Maestro Klaus Arp.
