The Popdust Files: beyonce, k michelle

Like “Marvin’s Room,” it appears that Beyoncé’s second single “Best Thing I Never Had“—with its catchy “sucks to be you” refrain—will be the recipient of numerous remixes by the end of the summer. The mid-tempo kiss-off makes it ripe for his and her responses, and R. Kelly protege K. Michelle has provided the first in the inevitable series, retitled “Worst Man I Ever Had.” If B gives her ex a saucy serving of attitude, Michelle blasts her abusive former partner with graphic and revealing descriptions of their violent time together (“I think of the times I had a fist to my eye / Face all swollen up that it hurt me to cry”). There’s no love lost on this version—while B sings of those times “when [she] almost loved [him],” Michelle reflects on moments she felt her life was endangered, turning to God as her only escape (“Thank God I didn’t die / Thank you God for saving my life / I’m so glad I’m over you / I’ma pray my way out”). It’s cathartic and a true anthem of empowerment, even more so than the original, but if this is too heavy for your Friday afternoon, there’s always B’s pretty wedding video to watch.
