In 2012, Humanities Washington’s Family Reading program tested a new curriculum, known nationwide as Prime Time Family Reading Time, with a fall pilot program at the Lynnwood Library. The curriculum, developed by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, proved successful and will expand to libraries from the King County and Spokane Public Library systems this spring. Prime Time Family Reading is a unique six-week, humanities-based program of reading, discussion and storytelling at public libraries and other venues that emphasizes the importance of families reading together to discuss significant cultural and ethical themes. The program creates a precondition for future learning by empowering parents and guardians of 6-10 year-olds to help their children enjoy reading and improve their reading abilities. Since 1998, Humanities Washington’s Family Reading program have reached more than 110,000 children and family members and distributed more than 118,000 books.
