Have you heard of Paul Doty?

  • His obit wasn't major news, though it probably should have been because his life was remarkable.  There were obits in the major East Coast newspapers: The Globe, the New York Times, and the Washington Post.   There will probably be tributes in Nature, Science, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  Let me tell you a little about him.

Dr. Doty, in addition to being an influential biochemist, was a strong advocate of nuclear non-proliferation and banning the use of chemical and biological weapons. He brought people together: instrumental in forming both the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and the Belfer Center for International Affairs at Harvard.  He was a founding member of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and International Affairs which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.

Dr. Doty didn't make the news very often.  There were a few items in the 1960s and 1970s, but mostly his work was out of the spotlight persuading and influencing newsmakers rather than making news himself.

His scientific work in DNA and RNA supported and complemented discoveries that changed our world.  He worked closely with such scientists as James Watson and Matthew Meselson.

Dr. Doty is one of many scientists like Linus Pauling who not only broadened our understanding of science but actively worked for world peace.  There are many like him still, but I find that the current environment in science is so competitive that it doesn't allow for the broad interests and activities of a man like Paul Doty.

See, he was a person who believed that the investigation of the world that is scientific inquiry is not amoral.  It can be applied for profit, for destruction, or for the betterment of all.  He worked toward the latter.

This bio at the Belfer Center describes his achievements in more detail.

I want you to know about him for two reasons.  First, I want to inspire you.  People you've never heard of have been influential in tremendous ways.  Second, I want to expand the pool of people who know about and appreciate Dr. Doty's life.

You must add at least one tag to this diary before publishing it.

Add keywords that describe this diary. Separate multiple keywords with commas.
Tagging tips - Search For Tags - Browse For Tags

    ?

    More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
    (The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

I find it very sad that Harry Morgan's obit is on the rec list.  I loved MASH as much as anyone, but Morgan hardly made Doty's contribution.

We do not forgive. We do not forget. The whole world is watching.
