BWI and its South Africa Construction sector affiliates launched a campaign on decent work in the construction sector towards and beyond hosting of 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The campaign aims at promoting decent work fighting for: the right to work, to organize, to bargain, right to a living wage, to zero accidents, to no downward variation, to quality Jobs, improved basic conditions, health awareness and skills development.
The opportunity for South Africa to host the 2010 World Cup came at the most needed time when the country was experiencing almost 46% unemployment, while the economy was promising and growing, the construction sector have been underperforming, contributing almost two percent to the GDP in the process nearly 90% of workers working under informal arrangements, with no possibility for good working conditions and Social Security.
Having come out of decade’s long slump, in 2006 the construction sector in South Africa recorded a 13.3% growth, the highest growth of all sectors of the economy. The construction sector annual contribution to GDP is 3.1%. Company increases in general are growing at a faster rate than compensation to employees and incomes are widening on a racial basis.
BWI construction unions in South Africa are BCAWU, NUM and SABAWO. BWI also work with LRS in this project for research and currently LRS is hosting the campaign coordinator. Solidarity support organisations are also involved contributing to the campaign. This include Swedish Affiliates & LO-TCO, Swiss Labour Assistance supporting LRS, SASK Finland and some other affiliates from Europe.
In the more than a year since its launch, the campaign has resulted into about 3,000 recruited members, 5 industrial actions, several social dialogues including with FIFA Headquarters and thousands reach by the message of decent work.
Byggnads Contributes 500,000 SEK to the BWI Decent Work Campaign
At the 2014 Byggnads Congress that took place in Stockholm Sweden, the close to 200 delegates unanimously approved a contribution of 500,000 SEK to the Building and Wood Workers International for the global Sports Campaign for Decent Work.
