Principal reviewers are permanent members of The Horn Book review staff. 

Jennifer M. Brabander is a former senior editor of The Horn Book Magazine.

Betty Carter, an independent consultant, is professor emerita of children’s and young adult literature at Texas Woman’s University.

Sarah Ellis is a Vancouver-based writer and critic. She is also on the faculty of The Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Danielle J. Ford is associate professor of science education at the University of Delaware.

Jonathan Hunt is the county schools librarian at the San Diego County Office of Education.

Susan Dove Lempke is assistant library director for youth, programs and techonology at the Niles Public Library in Illinois.

Joanna Rudge Long is former editor of Kirkus Reviews and writes and lectures on children’s books.

Julie Roach manages youth services at the Cambridge Public Library in Massachusetts. She also teaches children’s literature at Simmons College’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science and at Lesley University.

Dean Schneider teaches sixth, seventh, and eighth grades at the Ensworth School in Nashville, Tennessee.

Robin L. Smith teaches second grade at the Ensworth School in Nashville, Tennessee.

Lauren Adams teaches English and ELL at Natick (MA) High School and Adolescent Literature at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Tanya D. Auger is a former middle school teacher and historic house museum teacher. She is the author of Next Stop: Reading in Different Genres, a chapter-book and workbook series for second through fifth graders. She holds a master’s degree in learning and teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Deirdre F. Baker teaches children’s literature at the University of Toronto and is the children’s book reviewer for the Toronto Star.

Thom Barthelmess has worked in public libraries across the country and is now a lecturer at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University and serves as curator of the Butler Children’s Literature Center.

J. L. Bell is the proprietor of Boston1775.net, a website offering daily doses of history, analysis, and unabashed gossip about the American Revolution. A former book editor, he has written both nonfiction and fiction for young readers.

Sarah Berman sells books at The Concord Bookshop. She attended the University of St. Andrews, where she studied literature and wrote a dissertation about violence in children’s fiction.

Sam Bloom is a former elementary and middle school teacher. He is currently senior children’s librarian at the Blue Ash branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County in Ohio.

Anita L. Burkam is a former associate editor of The Horn Book Magazine.

Mary Burkey is a middle school teacher-librarian who has served as the chair of ALA’s Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production, blogs about audiobooks at audiobooker.booklistonline.com, and is the author of Audiobooks for Youth: A Practical Guide to Sound Literature.

Monica Edinger is a fourth grade teacher at the Dalton School in New York City, blogs at educating alice, and is the author of Africa Is My Home: A Child of the Amistad (Candlewick), illustrated by Robert Byrd.

Elisa Gall is a librarian at the Latin School of Chicago, where she teaches children in junior kindergarten through fourth grade.

Claire E. Gross is a former associate editor of The Horn Book Magazine and is the children’s librarian at the Egleston Square branch of the Boston Public Library.

Kathleen T. Horning is the director of the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, a library of the School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children’s Books.

Megan Dowd Lambert teaches in the children’s literature programs at Simmons College where she also earned her MA in children’s literature. She previously worked in the education department of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. She is the author of the forthcoming picture book, A Crow of His Own, with illustrations by David Hyde Costello, and Storytime Stories: A Whole Book Approach to Reading Picture Books with Children, both of which will be released in 2015 by Charlesbridge Publishing.

Nina Lindsay is supervising librarian for children’s services at the Oakland Public Library in California.

Jessica Tackett MacDonald is a collection development librarian at the Boston Public Library, specializing in youth and teen collections. She holds masters degrees in library science and children’s literature from Simmons College.

Amy Pattee is an associate professor of library and information science at Simmons College.

Angela J. Reynolds is head of youth services at Annapolis Valley Regional Library in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Rachel L. Smith, former marketing and circulation manager for The Horn Book, Inc., is associate content developer for an educational publisher. She has a master’s degree in library and information science from Simmons College.

Pam Yosca is the upper school librarian at Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston.
