Un-Blackballed

By Jake Caputo

I’ll keep this short.

It’s been just over a month since the Automatically Blackballed post, and today Envato announced that they are going to have an option for authors to sell their items under a 100% GPL license. This isn’t only good for me and other ThemeForest authors, it’s good for the WordPress community as a whole.

And yes, I’ve been invited to participate in WordCamps again.

How is it good for the WordPress community when a business with a completely GPL legal business model is attacked and bullied into accepting terms that Matt Mullenweg is attempting to unilaterally add to the GPL?

The only thing Envato was doing was saying if you don’t like how we do things, don’t participate. That is PRECISELY the stance Mullenweg and the WordPress Foundation take, and yet somehow Envato was evil?

This is just one more instance of an entire industry being bullied by someone who didnt get the legal opinion he wanted on the GPL and has gone on a crusade to dictate his terms to the rest of the “community.”

But hey, at least you’re not an undesireable anymore & can speak at WordCamps again.

Great news and pretty awesome of ThemeForest how they went to their community to see what they wanted. It will be interesting to see if other market places will now also let their authors go with 100% gpl licensing, like Mojo themes. They will be at a competitive disadvantage if they don’t I think. Anyhow, I think it’s great that authors can choose.
