“Specchia” by De-Signum Studio Lab
Neolithic megaliths (specchia) erected along the hillsides of Salento in southern Apulia are stone heaps that served as daytime and nighttime watchtowers. Used as territorial markers as well as for solar rites, specchia also saw the addition of circular structures. Drawing from Apulian history, the Specchia project is an outdoor design project, as well as a social protest against neglected and abandoned buildings, that recalls archaic memories, propitiatory rites and pagan ceremonies.
Specchia translates as a comfortable environment inextricably linked to the mother-earth, as space imbued with a “glocal” spirit in which to savor moments of total harmony with oneself and nature.
