Drunken Master

(Zendo the drinking game)

by Michelle Lepovic

Special thanks to Mike Sugarbaker who said to me on the street one day “Zendo really needs to be a drinking game”.

Unless otherwise specified play is identical to the standard Zendo rules. The game proceeds as a standard game of Zendo until one of the following events occurs. Then the students or master take the appropriate drinks and play continues.

Event

  • Student guesses wrong in Mondo – 1 drink for that student
  • Student accidently disturbs a koan (katsu) – 1 drink for that student
  • Student spends a guessing stone and guesses wrong – 2 drinks for that student
  • Student spends a guessing stone and guesses right – 5 drinks for all other students and the master.

A master should ideally try to create a rule that is neither too easy or too hard for the group (and this difficulty might change after a number of rounds of Drunken Master!) If the master chooses a rule that is too difficult and all
of the players give up, each player must then take 2 drinks, and the master must take 10 drinks!
