Registration Now Open for Northfield Rotary Club’s Thanksgiving “Turkey Trot”

The Northfield Rotary Club will hold its 14th annual Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2014. The popular run has grown from 200 participants the first year to over 1000 in 2013.
This year’s event will begin and end at a new venue: The Carleton College Weitz Center for Creativity, located at Third and College Streets in Northfield. The Turkey Trot begins at 9 a.m. Registration, for pre-registered and same-day registrants, will open at 8 a.m. Participants are encouraged to pre-register online by November 15 in order to receive a free long sleeve t-shirt.
The cost to participate is $15 before November 15 and $20 after. Proceeds will benefit the Rotary Student Youth Exchange Program and the Rotary EndPolio effort to eradicate polio worldwide.
Participants are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable food shelf donation to help local families in need.

2014 Official Northfield Election Results

According to the City's abstract of election returns, 7,631 Northfield voters showed up at the polls, out of 11,836 registered voters, giving Northfield a 57% voter turnout. This is slightly above the state average.

Swedish Fest Youth Participants Sought

The Northfield Swedish Club is preparing for its 39th annual Lucia celebration and is looking for girls and boys interested in participating as attendants. The event is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield.

The Bee IS BACK!! Come to the Northfield Public Library's Trivia Bee and Benefit Event!

This coming Friday, November 14 at 7 p.m. at the Grand Event Center, the public is invited to celebrate the Northfield Public Library with an evening of trivia, prizes and fun. The Friends and Foundation of the Northfield Public Library (FFNPL) will host a Team Trivia Bee led by quiz mistress Jessica Peterson White. Proceeds from this not-to-be-missed event will support the Friend’s current Capital Campaign for the expansion and enhancement of the facility. Community members are encouraged to register teams of up to four people (along with a tax-deductible entry fee of $100 or more) for trivia competition; individual participants and library supporters of all ages are also welcome to attend. There will be a suggested donation at the door.

Martin Devaney and Jake Hyer to perform at Northfield’s Contented Cow

The Contented Cow in Northfield is pleased to present critically-acclaimed and popular Twin Cities singer/songwriter Martin Devaney, appearing along with multi-instrumentalist and long-time collaborator Jake Hyer, on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 8 to 10 p.m. This performance is free and open to the public.
Dubbed “the Mayor of St. Paul” by friends and compatriots in the Twin Cities music scene, Devaney is a classically-trained musician and renowned singer-songwriter with six albums to his credit, each garnering more and more praise from critics and fans. His latest release, “House of Rust,” puts Devaney on the brink of national stardom. The Matchmaker at Northfield High School

Northfield High School Theater Presents The Matchmaker by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Thornton Wilder.
Fridays and Saturdays, November 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 7:30 PM, Sunday, November 16 at 2:00 PM. Tickets $7 for adults, $5 for students.
The Broadway musical Hello Dolly is adapted from this farce: Horace Vandergelder, a wealthy merchant in 19th Century Yonkers, NY, decides to take a wife and employs a matchmaker, Mrs. Dolly Levi. Dolly subsequently becomes involved with two of Vandergelder's clerks, several lovely ladies, and the headwaiter at an expensive restaurant where this swift farce runs headlong into hilarious complications. After everyone gets straightened out romantically, Vandergelder finds himself affianced to the astute Dolly Levi herself.

Public Benefit Concert for the Skatepark at The Cave

The Northfield Skateboard Coalition and The Cave (Carleton College) are hosting a public benefit concert for the skatepark on Saturday, November 8, at The Cave. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door. Proceeds from the event will be matched by a generous donor.
The concert features local bands The Liberty Orchestra, Pillow Fighting, El Triunfo, Love Surprise, Charley Markson and the Cutters, and Bob Crash. There will also be an opportunity to see the preliminary skatepark designs, view the Skateboard Coalition video, and talk to local skateboarders.

Northfield Hospice to Create Tree of Remembrance

Northfield Hospice invites you to pay tribute to someone special in your life and make the season brighter by adding lights to its “Tree of Remembrance.”
Kathy Blomquist, Director of Northfield Hospice, said a decorated tree at Northfield Hospital will symbolize gratitude for those who have meaning to us and have made a difference in our lives.
“This can serve as a memorial to someone you miss, a tribute to a special person in your life or a “thank you” for service or kindness,” she said.
Individuals and families can purchase a single light for $10 or a string of lights for $100. Funds raised from this event will be used in the hospice program to support those with life-limiting illnesses. All Saints Episcopal Church Open House and Building Consecration

Come see what all the construction has been about! All Saints Episcopal Church invites the Northfield community to an open house on Saturday, November 1 (All Saints Day), and a festive Eucharist with the Rt. Rev. Brian N. Prior, Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota, on Sunday, November 2, in celebration of the completion of our facilities renewal and renovation project.
Completely replacing everything but our historic 1866 "Prairie Gothic" worship space, the 12,000 sq ft expansion was designed from the ground up to meet the growing needs of our parish as well as to serve our local community. The new facility makes use of sustainable building techniques and energy efficient systems to reflect our care for the environment. Design, labor, and materials were all sourced locally whenever possible.
The Saturday open house runs from 1-5pm, and will include tours and refreshments interspersed with brief presentations, including a demonstration of our newly expanded organ and a brief history of All Saints. What the Trees Know: A Reading by Minnesota Book Award Winning Author Emilio DeGrazia

On Thursday, November 13, the Northfield Arts and Culture Commission (ACC) welcomes Minnesota author Emilio DeGrazia to Northfield to give a reading of poetry and prose titled “What the Trees Know.” The reading will be held at The Hideaway Coffeehouse and Winebar (421 Division St. S.) at 7:00 p.m.
DeGrazia began publishing poetry and creative prose in 1973, and in 1977 founded Great River Review, the state’s most enduring small press literary magazine. His first collection of short fiction, Enemy Country (New Rivers, 1984), was selected by Anne Tyler for a Writer’s Choice Award, and a novel, Billy Brazil (New Rivers, 1991), was chosen for a Minnesota Voices Project award. A second collection, Seventeen Grams of Soul (Lone Oak Press), received a Minnesota Book Award in 1995.

VIDEO: Northfield School Board Meeting (October 27, 2014)

The Northfield School Board held its regular meeting on Monday, October 27, at 7:00 pm, in the high school media center. In the absence of Board chair Ellen Iverson, the meeting was chaired by vice chair Julie Pritchard. A full packet of material from the meeting can be found here. The highlight of the meeting was a presentation of the site improvement plan for Sibley Elementary School. The next regular meeting of the school board will be on Monday, November 10, at 7:00 pm, in the high school media center.

Aboriginal advocate and Canadian Olympic athlete Waneek Horn-Miller to present Carleton convocation

Aboriginal advocate and Canadian Olympic athlete Waneek Horn-Miller will present the Carleton College convocation address on Friday, Nov. 7 from 10:50 to 11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. An activist who works to mend the relationship between Native and non-Native communities in Canada, Horn-Miller will present “First Nations Rights.” Convocations are free and open to the public; they are also recorded and archived online at go.carleton.edu/convo/.
Waneek Horn-Miller has overcome discrimination, self-doubt, and an infamous incident of violence to emerge as one of North America’s most inspiring Native speakers. With purpose and poise, she traverses the intersection of two generations of Native people, working to mend the dysfunctional relationship between Native and non-Native communities through social and political change.

Carleton Hosts Northfield City Council Candidate Forum

Are you familiar with the many local races that will be on the ballot come November? Want to meet the candidates who may end up deciding Northfield's future? Join us on Thursday, October 30th from 7:00-8:00pm in the Carleton College Boliou Hall Auditorium for a public forum with all your local city council candidates. Audience members will have the ability to submit questions during the forum and hear how potential City Councilors would respond to issues that are important to them.
There will four candidates present from the two contested city council races in town. Running for the Ward 1 City Council position will be Joe Gasior and Incumbant Suzie Nakasian. Running for an At-Large City Council position will be Dale Gehring and Incumbant Rhonda Pownell.
