Nikos Apollonio makes some of the best Irish Bouzoukis and Octave Mandolins available anywhere
in the world, and at a fraction of the cost of the better known overseas makers. Many
accomplished players, including internationally renowned professionals, play his bouzoukis and
octave mandolins.
Our 4 course Bouzouki is usually tuned an octave below a Mandolin GDAE or GDAD. 5 course
Bouzoukis can also be ordered. Our standard scale length for a 4 course “zouk” is 24" although
you may specify other lengths.
Soundboards are of Western Red or Alaskan Cedar, or Main Red (Adirondack) Spruce and back
and sides are Mahogany, or you can choose from Koa, Indian Rosewood, Sycamore and many
other exotic woods (see our tone wood section) at additional cost. Necks are generally of
Honduras Mahogany with Ebony fingerboards and bridge. There are pearl position markers on the
top and brass markers on the side of the fingerboard. Custom inlay is available at additional cost.
Adjustable truss rods are standard. Neck width and profile can be specified.
Binding, peg-head facing, sound hole rosette and even the truss rod cover are all of natural
woods. I use woods that contrast or compliment the woods you choose for the soundboard, back
and sides. Choices include Paduak, Ebony, Sycamore,Curly or Birds'eye Maple, Koa, Indian or
Honduras Rosewood, Bocote, and others as they are available.
