I like very much use MyPaint... and so, I shall like very much I can serve me as MyPaint to make of 2D animation (cartoon).

    - This kind of features will be envisaged ?
    - May you add a ligth table, a time line, X-sheet, etc... ? please !!

Sorry for my bad english !

These were exactly my thoughts when I started using MyPaint.  It seems like it would be pretty easy to add a simple time line and onion skinning with play forward and reverse features.

Really, this will be a new paradigm in computer animation!  Everybody is thinking vector animation or 3D animation, but hand-drawn frames really have a vibe that neither of those mediums can capture.

Is anyone else interested in this???

There it is a program for 2d Animation www.pencil-animation.org/ , Mypaint it is for natural media painting and drawing.

    @numarul7:

That's exactly what is awesome to me about mypaint.  It actually feels like I'm really drawing/painting with it!  The brushes and the brush creation system are amazing.

I would simply like to be able to stack my drawings so that I may create animations with the same ease that I am able to create static images using MyPaint.  Really, even just onion-skinning with no Time Line would suffice.

I tried to use the layers for onion-skinning, but the obvious problem with that is the loss of layer functionality...

I agree that a software for "computer assisted" traditional hand-drawn animation with Mypaint brush engine would be awesome !!!

Maybe the simplest would be to integrate Mypaint brush engine in a already-there animation software like pencil.
But pencil doesn't seem to be "ready" yet (last time I tried it, there was too much bugs or lacking features to really work with it)
so maybe to create a "Mypaint Animation" parallel version with additional timeline+onionskin+linetest could worth the time to do it
(But we must find someone interested in working on it .. )

I wonder if frames could be implemented by just extending the code for layers in a 2nd dimension...

So you could have a 2D grid window with layers going up and down and frames going left and right.

Then there could be a light table function extending in either direction with adjustable intensity so that adjacent frames to the one you have selected are darkest, and each frame you move away would be could be a bit dimmer.  The intensity setting could be used to adjust this feature from all the way on to all the way off.

It would also be really cool if the brushes could be imported into other programs.  It seems like a thorough documentation of the brush format spec would be the best way to facilitate that.  I wonder which would be easier...  Maybe one of the developers could speak to this?

Animation is an entirely different usecase. MyPaint will focus on painting. If there is a very small change that helps you a lot to use it for animation, then there is nothing speaking against this. However using a different layer model is clearly too much. MyPaint would lose a lot of its simplicity and focus, if it also tried to be good at animation.

I do really appreciate the focus of MyPaint, and that is one of the main reasons I enjoy using it.  The line on the website, "It lets you focus on the art instead of the program." is one of the reasons I downloaded the program to start with, and you are definitely adhering to that premise!

I was thinking more along the lines of extending the layer model rather than using a different one.  I have yet to look at the code; so maybe this isn't the correct way to approach the problem.  If I were to hack the code to do what I want, what approach would you recommend?

I mainly just want to be able to draw one frame with MyPaint brushes and look at another frame or frames simultaneously.  I would ultimately be using other software to combine the frames; so, any functionality beyond that and flipping through frames manually would be fluff to me.

How easy/challenging do you think it would be to add these things?

Adding support for the MyPaint brush-engine in Pencil should be possible. Krita (also a C++ QT app) is integrating it at the moment, so looking at what they have done might be useful.

I've started a thread about this in Pencil forum, go there and support the idea if you're inerested in:

I was thinking about the layer thing a bit more, and it seems that one incremental change to MyPaint that would be extremely useful would just be to add a layer view window.

Right now, there doesn't appear to be a way to name, rearrange, or disable/enable each individual layer.  Just those features would probably suffice for my purposes.  Also, it seems like they would be useful for anyone using the program.

    **EDIT**

oh, heh, I just checked the dev wiki and it looks like most of this stuff is planned for the 0.8 release.  awesome!  spacer

So, I did a couple of test frames using the new layer window in the clone I got off of git.  It's pretty spiffy except for one thing:  It doesn't save my layer names in the .ora file...  spacer

Do you think this will be fixed in the release?  I can see it geting out of hand pretty quickly when I have like 60 or 100 layers with no names...

The layers are actually saved, the layer names is just not loaded into the dialog again. Fix did not get in before the 0.8.0 release, but is fixed in git now and will probably be in a 0.8.1 spacer

    Hello,

I've just discovered mypaint and loved it so much that a just made a small patch adressing some of your use case  spacer
    See: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL6qQS0tBrw

Tested by one of my children (6 years). Enjoy !
