Julia Kodl is an artist and illustrator with “an unabashed love for natural history” – a love that is well reflected in the minimalist yet highly efficient free website she’s created. In the homepage, there are only a few elements – all of them prominent. The header features clickable logos on the left and right. Navigation links are set in a full-width toolbar along the top (each tab highlighted in turn so visitors always know where they are) with social media buttons on the right – a familiar location for most website visitors. The rest of the page is divided into two parts: a slow-changing image slider depicting chosen illustrations on the right, and a text box on the left that neatly summarizes Julia’s fields of expertise. The Artwork and Designs pages both showcase the artist’s works by placing them in images of different sizes. All the images are clickable and once clicked, visitors can view each on a larger scale. The CV page is nothing less than beautiful, never boring visitors with chucks of text. Instead, it uses visual elements and a smart visual hierarchy that make it interesting and easy to browse Julia’s resume. The Contact page features a customized contact widget – an excellent way for freelancers to both generate leads and give visitors the chance for quick contact. The Blog page is a great example of how to balance the visual and the textual, since it never over-burdens visitors with either. Every image can be easily pinned and the Blog Archive section is clear and easy to navigate.
