Universal Acquires M. Night Shyamalan’s Microbudget Thriller The Visit
There’s no question that M. Night Shyamalan’s career is currently on the ropes after a string of painful failures that includes Lady in the Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender and, most recently, After Earth. Still, there must be another good movie in him somewhere and perhaps going back to basics will allow him to find it. We’ve known for a while now that Shyamalan has been working on a top secret self-financed microbudget film called Sundowning, but other than that, he has been keeping relatively quiet. Fortunately, this week it appears that the project has found a home and we finally have some solid info to report including a new title, release date and plot synopsis. Hit the jump for more details.

The Cobbler Trailer Starring Adam Sandler
Although it initially seemed like Adam Sandler was branching out in some interesting dramatic ways at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, neither Jason Reitman’s Men, Women and Children nor Thomas McCarthy’s The Cobbler went over particularly well with critics. The latter, in particular, was singled out by many as one of the worst films of the fest, and now we can see why as the first official trailer for the film has finally arrived online. Are we absolutely sure this was directed by the same guy who did The Visitor and The Station Agent?
The movie stars Sandler as Max Simkin, a lonely cobbler who discovers that his magic stitching machine allows him to repair people’s shoes and then assume their identity when he puts those shoes on. Clearly it is intended as a take on the old adage about walking a mile in another man’s shoes, but the movie looks like a weird mash-up of a low brow Happy Madison comedy and an earnest modern day fairy tale. The Cobbler also stars Dustin Hoffman, Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi, Ellen Barkin and Method Man and the release date is still TBA. Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Playmobil Movie in the Works
For better or worse, the success of The Lego Movie had a major impact on Hollywood earlier this year and now we’re continuing to see many similar properties being brought to the big screen. Warner Brothers in particular is doubling down on The Lego Movie franchise by greenlighting a Lego Batman spin-off and a Ninjago movie in addition to the inevitable The Lego Movie 2. They are also working on a Minecraft movie with Shawn Levy in talks to direct. Now this week we are hearing that Lego’s chief rival Playmobil is setting up their own animated feature film. But can they replicate the critical and commercial acclaim without masterminds like Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the helm?

The Divergent Series: Insurgent Trailer Starring Shailene Woodley
With The Hunger Games: MockingJay – Part 1 now just a week away, Lionsgate wants to remind us about their other on-going YA franchise which will deliver its second installment in March. The laughably titled The Divergent Series: Insurgent stars Shailene Woodley (now with a new haircut!) as Beatrice Prior, who is now on the run in a dystopian post-apocalyptic version of Chicago. The first movie wasn’t exactly a huge hit, but this new trailer wants us to know that the sequel will feature some really big CG action sequences. The Divergent Series: Insurgent is directed by Robert Schwentke (R.I.P.D., Red) and hits theatres on March 20th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity to Be Re-released Without Oscar-Winning Score
Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar has been criticized by some for its questionable sound mix, which at times allows Hans Zimmer’s deafening score to drown out the dialogue, but last year Alfonso Cuaron took a very different approach with Gravity. The movie relied heavily on silence instead, creating an eerie and mostly accurate experience of being in space. Of course, Cuaron did also make use of a fairly minimal and subtle score by Steven Price, but that prompted some people to speculate that the movie could have been even more effective with no music at all. Now we can finally settle that debate once and for all as Warner Brothers will be double dipping Gravity early next year with a Blu-ray that includes an all-new Silent Space Version. Hit the jump for more details.

Sony Reportedly Developing an Aunt May Spider-Man Prequel
We’ve been hearing a lot of weird stories lately about Sony’s increasingly insane ideas to re-imagine The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, but man, it doesn’t get much more insane than this. Last month we heard that they were kicking around the idea of an all-female team-up film set in the Spider-Man universe, which seems like a response to the public’s newfound interest in female superhero flicks. The main problem is that there aren’t a whole lot of compelling women to choose from in Spider-Man’s world, but it appears that they have since zeroed in on one key female character who has been gravely ignored all these years. Yes, I’m afraid it’s not a joke… Peter Parker’s Aunt May might be getting her very own superhero movie.

Jonathan Nolan Developing Foundation TV Series for HBO
By now, you might be tempted to think that virtually every well-known and influential sci-fi story ever created has been adapted for the screen in some way. But of course, you’d be wrong. Right near the top of that list of important unadapted works would be Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, a book series so beloved that it remains the only series ever to win a Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series. Of course, one of the reasons it has never been made into a movie or TV series is because it revolves around a mathematician who is able to predict the future using a combination of history, sociology and statistics. A few years back, Sony picked up the big screen rights and assigned Roland Emmerich to direct, which sounded like the worst idea ever. Now this week we’ve learned that the project has found a much more suitable home at HBO instead.
