Big Tent: The Story of the Conservative Revolution is the definitive book on what it means to be conservative. Covering all the angles and making all the arguments, this one-volume summary of the conservative movement is a vital resource for all Americans who care about the future of our nation.
In Big Tent, bestselling author and professor Mallory Factor illuminates the conservative tradition in American politics with essays from the leading figures in the conservative movement.
Ambitious in its breadth and depth, Big Tent provides a fresh and surprising treatment of the conservative movement as told by the leaders of the movement itself.
These illuminating essays include:
• Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich on the political ideas surrounding the American Revolution;
• Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on the Bush Administration’s “War on Terror”;
• Attorney General and top advisor to President Ronald Reagan Edwin Meese on the Reagan Revolution;
• Historian David Norcross on the centrality of Edmund Burke to American political thought;
• Former chairman of the NRA and ACU David Keene on Buckley-style “fusionism”;
• Grassroots political activist Phyllis Schlafly on the rise of the religious right; and
• Senator Rand Paul on the future of libertarianism within the Conservative movement.
In this unique collection, conservative leaders explain how the conservative movement developed as a powerful force in American politics, how the movement functions now with a wide range of viewpoints, and where it is going in the future.
The Conservative Intellectual Tradition in America
Mallory Factor, the John C. West Professor of International Politics and American Government, brings the Conservative Intellectual Tradition in America to The Citadel in an exciting new course being offered in the spring of 2012. A survey of the political tradition of modern conservatism in the United States, the course features a veritable who’s who of guest lecturers from conservative political circles, including former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
This seminar is intended to serve as an introduction to conservative thought, connecting the tradition to other political, economic, and philosophical themes in Western culture and will feature both lecture and discussion.
