UPDATE: Billy Boyd’s The Last Goodbye

November 12, 2014 at 4:26 am by Demosthenes | Source: WaterTower Music| No Comments »

spacer No more teasers or samples. WaterTower Music has just posted up a full, complete version of Billy Boyd’s The Last Goodbye from the OST for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies so we can finally listen to it in full.

UPDATE: Well, it seems as though someone jumped the gun somewhere. Said song has now disappeared from Youtube. We’re certain it’ll be back soon enough, though. Somewhere. (more…)

When exactly did Saruman fall?

Saruman by John Howe.

Christopher Lee has precisely one line in the recent trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, but his little cameo was an unsurprising winner with fans. And, apart from reinforcing that stuff is always better with Chris Lee (maybe Chris can do all the voices for BOTFA — that would be ace!), it also sparked a surprising amount of speculation about Saruman’s intentions in desiring to confront Sauron alone.

Now, we can’t say how the confrontation occurred in canon: we know little more than that the White Council put forth its strength, that Saruman played an important role, and that Sauron deliberately withdrew as he had anticipated and planned for the actions of the Wise. Had Sauron, in fact, already fled? It’s a legitimate interpretation of the texts. However, Tolkien’s writings are a lot more informative about when Saruman “left the path of wisdom”. In this feature, Tedoras examines what The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, and The Silmarillion have to tell us about Saruman’s fall.

Hobbit Fan Contest: Queenstown, gateway to Middle-earth adventure

November 9, 2014 at 10:21 am by MrCere

NOTE: Click on any of the photos and then click again to see a much larger version. We think most of these are worth the clicks.

spacer You can smell it in the air and see it in the water and there is just no disputing that Queenstown, New Zealand is a special place. The Hobbit Fan Contest winners left some pretty amazing experiences at Rotorua and especially Hobbiton Movie Set to climb on a plane at head to the south island of the two-island nation.

More than one fan wondered aloud, “How can they rest of the trip possibly live up to this?” And then Queenstown worked its charms. The area is heavily saturated with Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film lore. And while there was always tourism for the majestic Southern Alps and the Remarkables set around a ski resort town that also happens to be the gateway of the world, there will long be an impact there from the six episodes of Middle-earth Peter Jackson delivered. ‘The Battle of the Five Armies’ Soundtrack up for pre-order on iTunes US Store with 90 second samples!

November 8, 2014 at 12:24 am by Aragorn the Elfstone | Source: iTunes| No Comments »

spacer 30 seconds not enough for you? Perfectly understandable. So for those of you who want just little bit more of a taste of Howard Shore’s final score in the Middle-earth Saga, iTunes has granted your wish.

The Special Edition Album of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is now up for pre-order in the iTunes US store, and along with that pre-order come 90-second samples for each track. This provides a much clearer idea of what to expect from this score – and if you ask me, the word you’re looking for is BIG. Or EPIC. Or GARGANTUAN… (you get the idea). (more…)

How much does The Battle of The Five Armies need to make for The Hobbit to outsell Lord of the Rings at the box office?

November 8, 2014 at 12:04 am by Demosthenes

spacer I’m not much into box office chest beating, but IB Times has done some interesting number crunching on The Hobbit versus The Lord of the Rings.

Turns out that if The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hits $942 million US, the total take for the Hobbit films will top that of Peter Jackson’s three The Lord of the Rings films.

That might seem a lot, but maybe it’s not in a series where the US box office take is becoming less important overall. (more…)
