Catching up on the Catch Up…
A bunch o’ random thoughts as I am still trying to find my desks after spending a week in Tennessee with my toddler daughter (which included first plane ride). She was better behaved that a lot of the adults we saw on our journey…
112 Days to an actual baseball game. Against a major league team. While it’s not a real game that means something, the first game the Red Sox will play in spring training happens on the road, then they take on the Twins on March 5th. The first game at home is against the Fish the next day…The “beat the crap out of the college teams” contests will be a day/night doubleheader on March 3rd…
So the “the Sox are going to sign Lester for the moon, the stars, and Larry Lucchino’s left leg, cause they are committed to winning!” stuff has started. Uh huh. While I would like nothing better than to see Jon Lester in a Red Sox uniform, standing on the mound on April 6th, my position still is: If they wanted him, why not sign him when they HAD him–it would have been must cheaper (and a lot less circuitous)… I’m not saying it will never happen in a million years…I’m just saying I am not willing to bet the farm it’s going to happen… Read more…

Finishing up the Postseason…
Poor Jake Peavy.
From a CY Young in 2007 to not being able to win a game if his life depended on it. 3 World Series Starts and 3 stupendous World Series losses (This includes last year’s 4 inning start with the Red Sox). He is truly the Tim Wakefield of baseball these days. He really is a better pitcher than his record suggests. OK, not in the postseason tho, as he is now saddled with a 12.79 (Yes, like 12 dollars and 79 cents) ERA. Last night, he couldn’t get out of the 2nd inning, leaving the bases loaded, and had already given up 2 runs. And of course, Yusmeiro Petit promptly allows all 3 base runners to score, and then adds 2 of his own. So it’s a 7th run 2nd inning, and the Giants night just get better from there, as they Yordano Ventura put on a freaking clinic, with 7 shutout innings of 3 hit ball, and a sparkling 1.49 ERA. His bullpen continued the trend with 2 innings of 3 run ball as well…
So the Royals and the Giants each get to live another day and the series is evened up at 3-3. And tonight is game 7, the culmination of this wild ride against these pretty evenly matched teams (with the spread favoring KC by just -1.5).
And I have not watched 1 inning of postseason baseball. The Royals getting here has been interesting, but the debacle that was the Sox’s 2014 campaign just wore me down and sucked the baseball life out of me. I expect it will get better once the hot stove heats up, but right now it’s just…Blah… Read more…

October 24, 2014: Trout Wins Third Straight Stan Musial Award
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout swept the balloting on his way to his
third successive Stan Musial Award, as selected by members of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance (BBA). Trout, who had arguably his worst full season in the big leagues, still posted a 7.9 bWAR on his way to leading the Angels to their first playoff appearance since he became part of the team.
Trout won in a rout, capturing all 15 first place votes and beating out his closest competition, Cleveland outfielder Michael Brantley, by 90 points. Only Trout and Brantley were able to cross the 100-point plateau.
In the National League, fresh off winning the Walter Johnson Award (again), Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers took home the Stan Musial hardware as well. Kershaw was the only player in the big leagues to outperform Trout according to bWAR, coming in with an even 8.0. Read more…

October 23, 2014: Kluber Edges Hernandez for BBA’s Walter Johnson Award
In a thrilling race, some new blood emerged to win the American League Walter Johnson Award. Corey Kluber, the unexpected ace of the Cleveland Indians, nipped 2010 winner Felix Hernandez of Seattle by six points in voting held by the Baseball Bloggers Alliance (BBA).
Kluber, who went 18-9 with a 2.44 ERA and a 152 ERA+, received eight of the possible 14 first place votes and 80 points overall. Hernandez received the other six first place nods and 74 total points, coming just short of being the second American League pitcher to have two Walter Johnsons on his mantle.
Unsurprisingly, it was a much different story in the National League as Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers won his third Walter Johnson in four years. Kershaw swept the voting, receiving all the first place votes and more than doubling the point total of the runner-up, St. Louis’s Adam Wainwright. Read more…

The World Series…ho hum…
I know, I know, I should be more excited about this World Series. A team with a 29 years playoff drought who barreled through all of the teams that were supposed to beat the snot out of them is facing the team who, although they were at the dance in 2012, beat the perennial favorite, St. Louis to get there.
And if that isn’t enough of a compelling story, Jake Peavey, JAKE PEAVEY started Game 2 last night. Of course he lost, giving up 4 runs in what would be a 5-run 6th inning, bringing the series to 1-1…
So it’s still anyone’s ballgame (no pun intended), and I am still holding out that KC will do this in 6…But if you are doing any betting on the series, or anything else, you can check out some great tips here…
But apparently, I am not the only one who feels a bit “eh” about this series, as the ratings for this series have been lower than previous years. Of course there are only about 19 Royals Fans in the world, and San Fran is the left coast, so while I wouldn’t really classify this as the World Series of Boring. (That would have been the Dodgers and the Tigers), but it’s certainly not a riveting battle to the finish… Read more…

October 20, 2014: Kimbrel Takes Home 4th Consecutive Goose Gossage Award
Perhaps the Baseball Bloggers Alliance’s (BBA) Award for best reliever needs to be renamed.
For the fourth year in a row, Atlanta Braves closer Craig Kimbrel took home the hardware. Given that the award has only been in existence for five, there’s no contest on who the most decorated relief pitcher in BBA history is. This was actually the first year that Kimbrel was actually challenged, finishing just 11 points ahead of Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman.
For the third consecutive year, Kimbrel posted an ERA under 1.75, though his 95 strikeouts was the lowest in a full year in his career. He led the league again in saves and put up an 227 ERA+, which was incredibly significantly lower than he had the last two years (399 and 311, respectively). Read more…
