Geographic Coverage

The elements in NDFD are available for the CONUS and 16 pre-defined CONUS subsectors. A subset of NDFD elements is available for Puerto Rico/the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Guam, and Alaska. Refer to the NDFD Element Status Table for the specific elements available for each domain.

Grid Resolution

Grids for the CONUS are currently available from NDFD at 5 kilometer spatial resolution. The spatial resolution for the grids for Hawaii and Guam is 2.5 kilometers; for Puerto Rico/the Virgin Islands is 1.25 kilometers; for Alaska, 6 kilometers. For the North Pacific Ocean Domain the spatial resolution is 10 km.

These spatial resolutions are nominal; the actual spacing in kilometers varies by latitude. The exact specifications for NDFD can be found in the GRIB2 Encoding Details for the National Digital Forecast Database and the NDFD Spatial Reference System web page.

The temporal resolution of NDFD grids varies by element; see the table of NDFD elements for specifics.

NWS plans to increase both spatial and temporal resolution in the future.
