Other interesting facts about our webmaster:

  • Early obsessions included Star Wars, making Super8 stop-motion movies, computers, listening to and performing music, American history, science fiction and fantasy books, video games. Yeah, he was (is) a bit of a geek.
  • Spent two years (1985-86) playing keyboards in a band called Facade which played the Western New York club circuit. Highlights included opening for Run-DMC (the year they released “Walk This Way”), Orchestral Manouevers in the Dark (OMD), and the Bodeans.
  • Nominated Best Rock Keyboardist in the 1986 Western New York Music Awards. Facade was also nominated Best New Group.
  • Was questioned by the Secret Service while in college, ultimately “released” and told by an agent that he was a credit to his country. It’s a long, funny story…and no, he did not make threats to any politicians…

Kevin likes…

  • Most classical liberal (libertarian) politics. Not all, but definitely most. That being said, he doesn’t own a gun, he thinks Ayn Rand was a bit wacky and he doesn’t run around calling Liberals “Socialists”.
  • Books: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Politics. P.J. O’Rourke, Neal Stephenson (“Zodiak” through “Cryptonomicom” – “Quicksilver” sucked), Bill Bryson, Cory Doctorow, Terry Pratchett, (some) China Mieville, John Varley, Tom Wolfe, Stephen King, Christopher Moore, Matt Ruff.
  • Computers: Mac über alles. To a lesser extent, Linux/UNIX, and certain aspects of Windows. Perl, Java, C#. Wants to like XSLT much more, but is still coming to terms with the syntax.
  • Music: Progressive, psyche, and generally well written rock music; Electronic and ambient music written and performed by groups that have real talent (e.g. TD, Jarre, Eno and Boards of Canada); Complex classical (mostly baroque); Jazz that’s not overly pretentious; good classic R&B and Funk; strangely enough, the album “The Fragile” by Nine Inch Nails – one of the best albums ever. King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, Tangerine Dream, ELP, Jean-Michel Jarre, Yes, Pre-1980 Genesis, Djam Karet, middle-period Rush, Max Webster, Pink Floyd from 1973-1985, Marillion, Allan Holdsworth.
  • Chinese, Thai, Indian, Cambodian, French cuisine.
  • Playing with his kids.
  • Movies: Godfather I and II, The Right Stuff, Goodfellas (as well as most Scorsese films), Brazil, Fight Club, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Blade Runner, Tarantino’s movies, Moonstruck, This is Spinal Tap, the collected works of John Hughes, the Coen Brothers, just about anything with De Niro prior to 1996.
  • Weightlifting and working out. He’s addicted and works out weekly with a trainer. He just wishes he could lose the protective layer of fat that covers his rippling muscles. Damn genetic traits…
  • Dunkin Donuts coffee.

    Kevin,

You are working with my colleague Megan Ayraud and I actually found this site by total coincidence. Literally just writing to say first, I LOVE the architect story, I’m sending that to everyone I know in a senior level role. Also, the Music “joke” you have up here? Where did you FIND that?!?!?! What an AWESOME story! Great stuff man! Keep it coming…

I came across your site when I did a google search for myself. It’s an interesting blog.

I wonder if we’re related in any way. My father, joe jarnot, grew up in Lackawana, ny, and I was raised south of Buffalo in a town called derby.

There is another Jarnot family living in New England, 71 miles north of Boston in Concord, New Hampshire. I enjoyed the WNY and Polish references in the reply postings. My name is John, son of John who graduated from Notre Dame University in 1954 and grew up on James St., near Clinton St. in Buffalo. His father was Walter and they were active in St. Peter and Paul Athletic Club. I remember Bocce’s Pizza and going to Bison’s games as a kid. Saw Johnny Bench and wanted to play baseball. Went to Syracuse University and met my wife Judy. We lived in Rochester, Ithaca, Saratoga Springs and then moved to Chicago before ending up in Concord 12 years ago. We have 3 kids, two of whom are done with college, the most recent from Colby up in Maine. We love to ski, snowshoe and hike. Kudos to Kevin on his musical accomplishments. Both of my sons play in various bands around these parts (guitar and bass.) I grew up near Maple and Millersport and graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1976. I really have not been back to WNY for more than a week since I left for college. I still have a brother, Jim and a sister Andrea living there. Life in NH is grand; so near the mountains, ocean and the traffic is not yet too bad. Big firepit in the backyard and live music being rehearsed in the basement most nights. Would love to connect with any other Jarnot’s nearby. Come visit sometime and we can play find the common relative that must link us all somehow.
