Folding@home reduced PPC work units spacer  spacer

Folding@home is deprecating the Mac PPC architecture for future work unit types. Existing work types will continue to have work units, but newer cores (required for newer work unit types) will not be developed.

Predictor@home has started to issue some test work units. However as of April 3rd, Mac work units are still failing. The Predictor folks are looking into the problem. It has been a long delay with their move to Michigan but slowly progress is being made. Their new URL is predictor.chem.lsa.umich.edu/ but that may just be temporary as they are looking for an available "shorter" URL.

Predictor is Coming Back spacer  spacer

The Predictor@home project finally has their new units ready. The workers (dTasser) need more attention though.

Current Worker Status by platform
Linux Worker: working for 32 bit and 64 bit
MacOSX Worker: doesn't run unless the user has gFortran libraries installed. The project is working on a self-contained compile. Do not accept Predictor work yet, unless you have gfortran installed.
Windows Worker: yet to be compiled.

Progress is being updated daily on the Predictor site. News on the Mac worker is being updated especially quickly, so check regularly for updates.

 Free-DC goes down spacer  spacer

Our old friends at Free-DC have slipped up in Folding@home. They just went down a step in the world, but all is well. We will take good care of their old rank.

If anyone wants to drop by their Fold forum for a polite wakeup call, I'm sure they would not mind too much.

Updates about the Team Clubhouse spacer  spacer

A few changes have been made to bring things up to date. On teamstats, the "SETI" nav icon now points to BOINC-SETI. Those wishing to see the SETI Classic stats can still find them in the 'seti1' section. Accordingly, our Milestones will use the plain 'SETI' disignation again.

Rosetta had been missing from the teamstats nav bar, this is fixed.

D2OL finally got their stats sorted out for Phase 2. They didn't make any changes to their stats web pages, at least none that broke our stats. So our D2OL stats picked up on the changeover and are working again. We don't seem to have anyone crunching on this project, but since it's already up, I'll leave the section live. Assorted other teams do use our stats on this project.

The team news site was down for over a week during MacNN backend server migrations. Our DB got moved to a new server, and it took some time to sort it out.

Rosetta starts CASP 7 spacer  spacer

Rosetta@Home has started crunching CASP 7 competition work units. With newer software and a couple of years of experience behind them, it is hoped they will fare well. CASP7 runs from May 10th to August 1st.

The purpose of Rosetta is to show the feasibility of distributed computing to predict computer folding. Some success has been had, but there is a lot more to learn. CASP 7 will measure the Rosetta team against other Protein prediction experts the world over. The had a decent showing in CASP 6, two years ago, so hopefully with the additional knowledge and experience may do even better. The CASP competions measure the accuracy of software or other manual methods in the area of protein prediction. Success in this area may lead to quicker breakthroughs in science and medicine by eliminating the time consuming manual processes.

D2OL Starting Up Phase II spacer  spacer

As of April 3, 2006, the D2OL project transitioned to their Phase II. This involved a freezing of the old stats, zeroing of the new stats, and assorted flakiness on the part of the project servers.

At the time Phase I went down, we apparently had only one member (jimhadd) crunching on this project. From what I read on their forum, the new stats are still a little flakey. Once they settle down, it will be possible to start them up again on our end.

That is, if a few people remain interested. Is Team MacNN still interested in D2OL?
