What are ringtones? What's the difference between ringtones and real tones or musictones?
Ringtones are audible alerts that indicate an incoming call on your cell phone. The tones are being produced by an electronic sound generator. A special code, like a midi file, controls the nature and the sequence of the tones. These kind of ringtones, monophonic or polyphonic, sound mechanical.
Realtones, truetones or music tones (same thing) are small pieces of real music. They too are used as audible alerts, but there's a difference. These files, usually in MP3 format, can be anything from a spoken message to a piece of your favorite film music. A realtone actually is... a real tone.
Although realtones sometimes are called ringtones, there's a world of difference between the mechanical sounding midi ringtones and the real thing. However, realtones take up more memory then midi files and not all mobile phones can play realtones. Realtones are also more expensive.
You don't have to buy midi ringtones. It's possible to transfer data from your pc to your mobile. Search for midi files on the internet and build your own collection. There are hundreds of web sites that offer free midi files. A nice site with classical midis is Music Files. An excellent search engine for midi files is Midi Site.
It might not be that easy to collect free real tones. You better not use clips longer than 30 seconds and you need special software to edit audio files. Combining high performance and strong compression, MP3 will give the best results, but you could do with some experience in converting audio formats.
And then there are the copyrights. You're not allowed to use someone else's audio files. A lossless wave file in CD quality would be perfect to edit and to convert, but you're not going to find that material for free, unless you use your own CD's. Still, sites like CTunes offer you ready made real tones at no cost.
